Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Dexter is a handsome mix of Boxer and Pit Bull. He is a happy, goofy, 2 year old neutered male who is microchipped, fully vaccinated and ready to start his new life. He likes to give kisses to people and other dogs. He is a nice medium size of 60 lbs. Dexter has been waiting for the right person since January, 2015 and is now in a foster home to help him unwind from shelter life and get ready for his forever home.
Dexter is doing great in his foster home. He is housetrained, knows how to use the dog door, and hasn't chewed on anything but toys. Dexter is very treat motivated and knows how to sit and is working on "leave it." He loves to play with the dogs at his foster home, go for jogs, chew on Nylabones and hang out near his foster parents. He is crate trained but also does well uncrated in a room with another dog when no one is home. He likes to sleep in a dog bed or with his foster parents and will let you sleep in as late as you want. Dexter is great out in the public and does well at his adoption showings at Petsmart. He has met many dogs of all sizes, and does very well with them. At times, he will bark at the dogs that don't come over to greet them, but it is not aggressive and he is working on being more calm and patient.
Dexter walks a little differently than most dogs. X-rays showed that he has a "sigmoid conformation of his tibias." There is no suggestion of pain, degenerative joint disease or hip issues and it doesn't slow him down at all! We think it gives him even more character. He should be kept lean and fit and avoid jumping sports and any other activities that would put a lot of stress on his knees. All large dogs are at risk of a cruciate ligament tear, and this condition puts Dexter at an increased risk. Surgery would be needed if he tears a cruciate ligament. Dexter's abnormal gait causes him to drag his front feet a little bit when he walks. He is fine around the house and in the yard. It will be best for Dexter to go for walks on grass or dirt. He will need special booties on his front feet if he goes for walks on concrete or asphalt to protect the tops of his toes.
If you are interested in meeting Dexter, please email his foster mom, Brenda, at brendatuzak@yahoo.com Dexter will be at South Hayward Family Celebration of Independece Day at Cesar E. Chavez Middle School Lawn, 27845 Whitman Street, Hayward, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm on Saturday July 4th. He will also be at the East Bay SPCA’s annual adopt-a-thon at Jack London Square on Saturday, 7/18 from 10am-3pm. He will be at Petsmart in San Leandro on Saturday, 7/25 from 12:30pm-4:30pm. Just make sure to bring all members of your household and any dogs you might have to make sure everyone gets along.
