Here's what the humans have to say about me:
**Poppy is currently living in a wonderful foster home in Houston, Texas and is ready to join her new family. She is available for local or out-of-state adoption.**
This beautiful girl was found cowering on the side of a rural road on a stormy day on a street seldom traveled. She was lucky to be spotted by a caring person that had just come from the grocery store and was headed home. She was scooped up, given a human quality meal straight from the grocery bags in the car and taken into the safety of a foster home, where she’s been since that amazing day. She’s been named Poppy, short for Nice Poppy, Pretty Poppy, Poppy Love (affectionately named by a sweet 2 year old girl)!
Poppy is a Plott Hound, estimated at 3 years old and around 55 pounds. Since this young lady’s rescue, she has a new lease on life and acts just like a puppy. She seems to have started over and her zest for life is that of a pup. With
Poppy, it’s the best of both worlds because she’s friendly and silly like a puppy when engaged, yet crate trained, potty trained and beyond all of the puppy bad habits. Poppy is learning how to live as a loved pet and she is enjoying it a great deal, just like her first bag of groceries.
Poppy is still confused at times because she doesn’t fully know or understand what it is to be a loved dog and important member of a pack yet and it is so wonderful to watch her transform into that. She is very happy now, but she will still run to hide if she hears yelling or other loud noises. Her foster family is working with her daily to help ease her into new things, which includes desensitizing her to loud noises.
Poppy was taken to the vet for her initial check-up after her rescue and found to be in really great condition, despite being too thin. She wasn’t spayed or microchipped and we assumed had no vaccinations on board, so all of those things have been taken care of. She’s eating well and has filled out beautifully too.
We’ve never met a dog that is so attached to her crate, but Poppy loves hers and we feel that she may detach from it in the future, but it really is her safe spot for now. She’ll need to join a family that will allow the kennel to be set up for her use until she lets you know that she no longer has a need for that safe spot.
Poppy is perfectly in love with all people and dogs that she meets. She currently lives in a foster home with a 3 pound, dominant Chihuahua and a 6 pound Rat Terrier that snaps at her every time she walks by. Poppy loves the attention from both of them and apparently doesn’t take the snaps with any real threat. She isn’t bothered nor does she react to the presence of a cat either at this time. She’s met several children since her rescue and adores them. She’s gentle and sweet and would be a great addition to almost any family dynamic.
Poppy has one hysterical quirk that must be mentioned. If a crow lands in her yard, on her watch, she’s like a choir soloist. She lets out a hound dog bellow that you’d think would be an annoying sound, but it is actually the most adorable noise ever. It is just another sign of her growing comfortable in her skin. Her absolute favorite activity now is to practice being a lap dog…that’s right she likes to lie across her human friend’s laps. She also loves to play and interact with everyone. She is great at chasing tennis balls, but still learning the fetch part of it. She holds her toys in her front paws and rolls around on her back, which is simply adorable!
She’s a snuggly dog too. She follows her foster mom around (especially when she’s on the phone) and lightly paws her to get some attention and affection. If you rub Polly’s giant ears, you’ll be her friend for life! While giving belly rubs, she will paw at your hand if you stop.
This sweet girl already knows the commands “sit” and “shake”, but because she is treat motivated, she can learn other quickly. Poppy is not generally the type of pup to play independently in the back yard, but if her people and other dogs were there, she’d be right next to them. She’s truly one loyal companion and would “follow you to the end of the Earth”. She is looking for a family that is calm, stable, extremely affectionate and has some patience to help her continue learning how wonderful this world really can be. She’s one of the rescues that we adore and love to help transition into their new families. She’ll provide so much joy and fun for her new people.
If you have tons of love to share and want that in return, Poppy is the Plott Hound for you. She’s currently living in Houston, Texas and available for out-of-state adoption. Her adoption fee is $450, which helps to cover the costs of her airline ticket, her travel kennel and her bed. Please email us for an adoption application or more information at adoptions@reggiesfriends.org. Nice Poppy, Pretty Poppy, Poppy Love is waiting to hear from you!
