Hi!
My name is Malachi.
I am a fawn, neutered male, Great Dane.
I am 2 years old.
I am in a foster home in central Illinois. I will travel towards your home, as needed, if you live in a different region.
I had a happy tail which damaged a portion of my tail, causing it to die off and then had it amputated. I now have a cute stubby tail which has very sensitive nerves if you touch my tail or rear end. I’d like it best if you don’t touch my rear end or tail.
I require an owner who is an experienced leader of dogs.
I like older kids (10 years and older) who are experienced with dogs.
I do not do well with young children because they make me nervous. I was physically abused by young children who were very mean to me.
I consider it my job to protect my family. But I do require training to help me reduce my guarding instincts against outsiders.
At the beginning, I do have a tendency to guard a parent from kids (via warning bark). I will need the parent to say NO! and push me away a few times until I learn that my owner doesn’t need protection from her/his kids.
I am at my happiest being an only dog.
I have high prey drive towards fast moving animals (i.e. birds, rabbits, cats, dogs, etc).
I am a very lovable dog and I love to be with my family.
I love to sleep on my dog bed, in the master bedroom overnights. I like to protect my owners.
I love to sniff and investigate.
At first, I will counter surf and steal food unless my leader tells me NO!Thereafter, I typically refrain from counter surf and stealing food
I am not food aggressive but I really do appreciate you say my name first before sticking your hand in my food bowl.
I am not toy or ball aggressive.
I like daily basic training. It helps me see that you are a true leader and helps me gain confidence in you. That includes walking.
I am crate-trained and feel safe in there when visitors come over and be introduced to me.
I LOVE to play soccer (even if it’s deflated) with my human kids and/or adult owners.
I LOVE to go out for walks and I walk well with my owner. However, I don’t see human kid as the leader so I tend to lead them. It’s best that kids do not walk me due to high prey drive.
Gentle leader attached to my collar works best for me. It’s easier to control me due to my high prey drives.
I’m good with commands (not necessarily with kids). I know the following:
Sit, Down, Around, Right, Left, Cross, Stop, Heel, Come, Potty, Back, NO!, Uh-huh!, In the crate, Time to eat.
Typically (not always), I am controlled by verbal restraint.
