My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

UPDATED BIO 6/20/15: Meet Ivy. She is an approximately 11 week old purebred yorkie puppy that weighs about 2.7 lbs, and is being fostered in West Palm Beach.

When Ivy first came into rescue, not only did she have coccidia and hookworms, but she was completely emaciated, and had free flowing fluid in her abdomen. Her blood test also came back extremely abnormal. We did not know whether the emaciation was due to an underlying disease and she was unable to absorb nutrients, or whether it was a simply matter of her not getting enough to eat. She immediately started treatment for the parasites, and started getting fed every 3 hours. Within 72 hours, all the fluid in her abdomen was gone. It took her a couple of weeks before she really wanted to eat, but now that she is a bit older, she loves food, and is still getting fed 4 times a day or so. We can no longer clearly feel her spine and rib bones, and she is definitely no longer underweight!

Ivy recently had a 2nd blood test and fecal. She tested negative for any parasites. Her blood test came back much better than the first time, and most of her levels are back in the normal range. She does still have anemia, and her gums are not quite the pink color they should be, so she is now on an iron supplement twice a day. She has also started to lose her fur. She tested negative for demodex mange and her thyroid is normal. The vet said the fur loss was most likely a result of her starvation, and it might take up to a year for her fur to grow back in fully.

Ivy is otherwise a completely normal, happy, playful little puppy. She loves doing all things puppy which include playing with all the animals, chewing and biting on anything and everything, chasing balls and toys, exploring and learning news things. Ivy is very smart, she is crate trained and she learned to sit from the other dogs during mealtime. Now, she sits on command or whenever there is food. The vet does not want Ivy to get heart worm medication yet, so she is not outside very often. We have puppy pee pads down, but she is not taking to house training as easily as she did to sitting, so she probably won't be house trained when she gets adopted. However, she is smart, and we feel is she was taken on regular walks and goes outside more often, she will be house trained in no time.

We are going to continue to keep an eye on Ivy and give her another test for her anemia in a month or so. If she has improved, we hope she will be ready to be adopted at that point Please keep in mind we are looking for a home no longer than 6 hours from West Palm Beach, no children under the age of 13, and no large dogs.

Updated bio. 5/26/15 Ivy is a very tiny, 1.8-pound, 2 month old, tiny girl. She is being fostered in West Palm Beach, FL.

Due to Ivy's fragile condition and body weight when she came into UYR, we are carefully monitoring her weight and other vitals to ensure that she will be a healthy puppy when adopted. Foster Mom is diligent in hand-feeding and hand-syringing liquids into her, which is very time-consuming, and we are hopeful that Ivy will soon begin to have an appetite and start gaining weight.

Due to Ivy’s medical condition and low weight status, we have decided to hold her adoption applications in a folder since she will not be ready to be adopted for several months. We have a process in place wherein our Adoption Application Processing Team will file away in a folder any submitted applications until that time we feel Ivy is healthy enough and ready to find her forever home. Please understand that could be several months. Once we know she is healthy enough to be adopted we will notify, by email, all applicants that are still interested in a possible adoption of Ivy.

Ivy will need to be adopted within a 4 to 5 hour drive of her foster homes so no out of state applications will be considered. She also cannot go to a home with children under the age of 14 due to her small size and very young age.

Ivy will need to be under veterinary supervision as she continues to regain her health. Unfortunately this medical care comes at a cost. Please help us continue to help Ivy become a very healthy and happy puppy who will live a long life. Every dollar will help us to help Ivy ready that goal.
Your donations will be greatly appreciated by Ivy and United Yorkie Rescue.

Pup Dates on Ivy will be posted on her Looking for Love bio. Look for those updates on her progress as United Yorkie Rescue and her foster parents work to make Ivy a healthy little puppy sweetheart.
