My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Turns out Penny has no aggression or biting issues at all. She has a sight issue, so she uses her beak to feel her way before she steps up. She is incredibly sweet and loving, a wonderful little bird for someone who understands she uses her beak like reading braille to know where she is going is safe. She is most sight challenged when something is offered directly in front of her face, she does much better when you approach from a slight side and she seems to be able to see more and know what or who is there. Even when you offer something straight in front of her, she does not get aggressive, she just panics and grabs it and tosses it away like its a bomb about to go off. I learned this with pizza crust
smile. When she realized I was offering her a treat, she happily took it on the second try, but the first time I just walked up and she panicked.

Penny needs a home with someone that is either very confident and won't flinch or pull away when Penny checks your hand or finger with her beak, or an experienced bird home. We thought we had her placed in a forever home, but they were new to birds and thought Penny was attacking them. Penny is back with us and her normal cuddle bug of bird. She loves to sit with you, her only bad habit is jewelry, girlfriend loves shiny! But she won't chew your ear off to get your earring, she'll just try to work it til she pulls it out.

We would welcome families with preteen+ aged kids (old enough to understand and learn birdie body language and behaviors), college students or about anyone who wants a snuggly best friend, who is also quite independent and happy to hang out on a playstand. She is not a screamer but being an IRN, you will hear her when she is asking where her dinner is (or why you're taking so long to open her cage today).

Penny is currently at the shelter in Blairstown, NJ, but for a serious adopter we would be happy to transfer her back to Jen in Center Valley, PA.

She has shown to be happy hanging out guys too, we were told she does not like men, but she made friends with my husband in no time - long as he would scratch her head, she did not seem to mind who she was with!!!

She has shown to be sweet and friendly with everyone. She will make an exceptional family bird for a home with kids who wants a very social bird that loves to spend time with all family members.

Email Jen at adoptions@ahelpingwing.org or fill out the application on our website. Time is ticking, she's a really easy bird to fall in love with!!! Someone save me from myself and the charms of this little beauty!!

The Adoption Process:Fill out our online adoption application which can be found on our website, www.ahelpingwing.org (no phone calls please). A representative from A Helping Wing will be in touch to answer all questions and discuss setting up a first visit. Multiple visits are required before adoption. Although there is no application fee, there is an adoption fee, which covers food, medical care, etc., and allows us to continue our efforts in rescuing, caring for, and finding homes for all of our birds. All birds at AHW have been vetted and have negative tests for any disease before they are made available for adoption!
