Here's what the humans have to say about me:
JET
Age: Approximately 15 months/ Breed: Mixed with some Lab x Terrier
Jet is one amazing very smart dog! After surviving a lonely, hungy and difficult beginning including being hit by a car and suffering a badly broken lower front leg, Jet has made it from Mexico to Canada and now after a few months of medical care and rehabilitation he is now on the hunt for a forever home.
He settled in right away and from the first day, showed us what a tremendous addition he will be to the right home. Jet is full of life, has tons of energy and loves to run everywhere, always wanting to be near his foster parents or foster furbrothers. He loves to flop down after play or during quiet times and watch everyone and everything (he is unbelievably inquisitive about his world) from the safety of one of the big fluffy beds scattered about. His favorite is of course his own bed that he sleeps on at the foot of our bed every night – he sleeps through the entire night without incident. Of particular note is that Jet cannot be crated – we discovered immediately that he absolutely has horrid panic attacks and cries and fights to the point that he could hurt himself – especially his one front leg that had been broken. We have never had to worry about that from day one as he has not needed it – ever. A commitment to no-crating would be required from any perspective adopter.
Jet is a real snuggle-bunny and loves to curl up beside his foster parents anytime of the day or night and gives lots of kisses. He loves to be touched and being brushed or scratched makes him very happy. His many toys keep him quite happy on his own for ages. He has shown no signs of separation anxiety or destructive behavior when left alone – with or without the other dogs in the house. He has never had an accident in the house and learned very quickly where he was expected to go. Car rides were a challenge in the beginning but now he jumps in himself, sits or lays in the back and cries with excitement as we near the park.
Jet arrived with a very strong food drive and it took a while to help him realize that he was not in starvation mode anymore and that he did not have to try and eat everyone’s food. He has never been food aggressive with humans - actually quite passive - but will still instinctively go for any food left sitting around. In time he will learn that he is safe and will never have to fight for food again.
Jet’s personality has developed over his time with us and what was very fearful, unsure and sometimes defensive behavior around both humans and other dogs has progressed as he has become more healthy and confident. His foster home right now has two other dogs and although it has been a bit challenging as Jet struggled to find his place in the “pack” and didn’t have to bully himself up the food chain, we think he has finally settled down and found his place. We are at the off leash park daily and working on social skills – Jet will be off leash very soon as his recall is now excellent and his behavior with other dogs has become more relaxed as he has become more confident. He understands a number of basic commands now but will require some ongoing training in a few areas to ensure his success as a well socialized member of the canine community. His food motivation has made training fairly easy with the use of training treats!
Jet would continue to do well in a home with a confident pack leader as he can be headstrong and has not quite figured out why he can’t have it all his way yet! We also recommend that Jet should be in an environment where there are no small children – 14 and older only. He would be happy with someone who will exercise him daily so he can run and play – lack of exercise for Jet could cause digging or destructive behavior. He has a strong chase instinct and is unbelievably fast even with his one slightly lame leg and loves loves loves to chase a ball or other toy! We would suggest that Jet be in an only dog home so he can get tons of attention and love without much competition - he competed and lost in a previous life – now it’s his turn to win!! Competing for love and attention can be a very anxious time for Jet. A potential adopter should be able to commit and demonstrate to DINO that they will be able to provide for Jet’s ongoing medical antinflammatories and recognize the potential for additional costs for arthritis in his front leg due to the break.
Note from Jet - I will make a great addition to your home, love you forever and be loyal to the end. Come see me soon!!!
