My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Ruby is a sweet young pup with plenty of energy, curiosity and athletic ability. She arrived with few manners, no leash experience, and not house trained. In less than two weeks, she has learned to sit, take treats gently, how to walk on a leash without choking herself, and is about 80% accurate with her house training. While she will whine for the first few minutes in her crate, she quickly settles as long as the house is quiet and activity minimal. As soon as she hears people moving about….she wants to be part of the action.
She lives with three other dogs and has quickly adapted to the hierarchy of the pack. She gives respect to the pack members that demand it, and plays with those who will engage with her. She also lives with cats. She is very curious about the cats and tries to play. She has taken a few good swats across her nose but that does not deter her for too long. True to her terrier DNA, if something smaller than her…..runs from her….she will chase it. However, I have not perceived any aggressiveness with this behavior. It seems to be for amusement only. I believe that she will adjust to any feline housemates with relative ease.
She will amuse herself with toys and likes to chew. She has not yet chewed anything that has not been given to her but the potential is there, so I provide her with plenty of other options. Common behavior to any dog that has ever been hungry, she eats her food quickly, noses through any trash containers that she can reach, and will be a counter surfer when she becomes tall enough. She has the ability to jump onto the top of my table and dishwasher from a standing position. She responds to re-direction quickly but has little conscious when no-one is looking if food is the goal. The positive side of this is…..Ruby is very motivated by treats. This has been instrumental in the success of her house training. It took her two days to figure out……. If I pee outside….I get a treat!
Ruby has a wonderful nature and is very people oriented. She is a snuggle bug who wants to be where the people are. Typical of younger dogs…..when she settles on the couch or on the bed, she prefers to be touching another dog or person.
Ruby has demonstrated a somewhat elevated level of protective behavior over her people and pack members when unfamiliar dogs are in close proximity. This seems to be inherent in her nature and may be something a potential owner will need to be aware of and be prepared to address in the future. In terms of her pack members, Ruby is a good resource sharer. She will drink and eat from the same bowls without any grumbling or aggressive behavior. I can remove food and other objects from her mouth without any problems.
She will chase a ball or toy and prefers to play keep away rather than bring it back. She is silly and lovable with an adorable face that is full of expression and very demonstrative of what she is thinking or how she is feeling. She loves to greet people face to face and is quite willing to deliver kisses. She is very interested in children.
Ruby will be a great addition to an active people household and a great canine companion to another moderate to high energy dog.
