Here's what the humans have to say about me:
**Akira currently lives in Houston, Texas and is available for out of state adoption. His adoption fee is $450, which includes his airline ticket, a travel crate and comfy bed. The crate and bed are his to keep upon arrival. If adopted, he will take a direct flight into the nearest major airport to his new family. He is available to “meet” via video chat with an approved adoption application. Akira will remain in Houston until he is officially adopted.**
This stunning boy was taken into the city shelter in Houston, Texas as a stray. An amazing and compassionate photographer that visits the shelter spotted him, took his photos and shared in hopes of finding a person to adopt him or a rescue to take him in. He’s a beautiful subject and we decided that we had to help him find a better future. He was named Akira.
Akira is an Australian Shepherd mix and only about 1 year old and 30 pounds. He joined our rescue group just one week ago (mid-March 2015) and we don’t plan on him hanging around very long. He is very well mannered and has so many desirable traits that will ensure his fit into any family dynamic.
He is a bit underweight and had a slight cold, but has seen the vet and is on the fast road to recovery. He has tested negative for heartworms and although he is very new to the program, he is ready to find a family to love him and there’s no reason to delay. We are still getting to know his personality, but so far he seems very kind, gentle and has a medium energy level. Once he comes out of his shell a little bit more, feels confident in the situation and feels 100%, he will be a bit more puppy like due to his age and breed.
Akira seems to be potty trained as he has been in a room with our volunteers for 3 to 4 hours at a time without having any accidents. He will need to learn the routine once he arrives at his forever destination, but that should be easily learned with guidance and attention. He doesn’t particularly enjoy getting into the crate he has been provided with, but if he has been a stray for a while, he was probably never taught that this is a safe spot. Kennel training may be on the things to learn list for our dear Akira.
We only gotten to observe Akira at the shelter with other dogs and he seems to get along with them well. He has been gentle and fairly calm thus far and hasn’t been jumpy or overly excitable. He has not been tested with cats yet, so we cannot say one way or the other. Since he’s been rather well behaved this week, we feel that he could be an excellent companion for children that could play with him.
Akira’s affectionate personality is already showing through. He really enjoys spending time with people and if given the opportunity, he will climb in your lap for some love. We see movie nights on the couch with this sweet fella and a snoozing buddy at your feet while you work at your desk. He has a very cute habit of finding a small space, out of the way, but still in the room you are in to slide into. It seems he feels safer when he has a friend nearby.
He enjoys taking walks on his leash and doesn’t pull, but he does walk side to side in front of his walker. He is doing exceptionally well considering this may be the first time he’s been on a leash walk. He also takes treats out of our hands very gently like a good boy. Belly rubs are definitely a YES in Akira’s book. He will lie down and take that treatment any time. We are pretty impressed with this boy already, if you haven’t noticed!
A couple of really nice observations noted by the volunteers were that he took to clicker training very quickly, he responds extremely well to positive reinforcement training, he makes strong eye contact when he is called. These all indicate that he is intelligent and will be easy to train. He has been quiet and was left alone for short periods of time without crying, whining or barking.
We are excited to help Akira find a family that will love him and make him an important part of their family. He is available for adoption now and his adoption fee is $450, which covers his airline flight, crated and bed. If you have any questions or feel that Akira is your next pup, please email adoptions@reggiesfriends.org.
