Ivory is one special, gentle 3-4 year old, 50lb Pound (pitty-hound) pooch. When we were walking the runs this little girl immediately greeted us through the run with a wag that caused her tail to go in circles! She had been in the shelter for a couple months, and had a very rough start. She was pregnant when she entered the shelter and they had to do a spay/abort. For the past couple of months she also was continually battling a severe upper respiratory infection which would not go away with meds. We temperament assessed her and she passed all items, although she was a little soft. When we took her to the jail, she was a little reserved as we knew she would be, but in the first 48 hours she blossomed like we had hoped. She loves belly runs, she loves to play with toys and most importantly she loves affection. We can't wait to see how much more this sweet lady blossoms as the weeks go by and the actual training begins. Ivory is heartworm positive and Canine Cellmates will be paying for her treatment.
Ivory is part of the Canine CellMates program at Fulton County Jail in Atlanta, GA that pairs inmates up with urgent dogs from the Fulton County Animal Shelter. Dogs must pass a temperament test and then go through a 10 week training course similar to the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) certification. The Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program, established in 1989, is an American Kennel Club program to promote responsible dog ownership and to encourage the training of well-mannered dogs. The evaluation consists of ten objectives. All items must be completed satisfactorily or the team fails. Test items include: Accepting a friendly stranger. Sitting politely for petting. Allowing basic grooming procedures. Walking on a loose lead. Walking through a crowd. Sitting and lying down on command and staying in place. Coming when called. Reacting appropriately to another dog. Reacting appropriately to distractions. Calmly enduring supervised separation from the owner.
Ivory is available for adoption immediately and will be able to go to her forever home after graduation. I would definitely get my application in early for this girl, she is a heart stealer! Please fill out an adoption application at www.caninecellmates.org and email it to adopt@caninecellmates.org.
