Here's what the humans have to say about me:
**Travis currently lives in Houston, Texas and is available for out of state adoption. He is available to meet via video chat once an adoption application has been submitted. His adoption fee is $450 to help cover the cost of his airline flight, his travel crate, comfy bed and travel documents. He will remain in Houston until he is adopted.**
This charming boy with a constant smile is Travis. This guy has exuberance for life and is just a happy dog every day of the week. We are excited that he has recently joined our group to finally help him find his forever family. He was just a puppy when somehow this baby landed in our city pound. A rescue group saw his adorable puppy face and his potential and pulled him out of there and he was saved from being put down. Unfortunately that is where their assistance ended and he was placed in a boarding facility and seems to have fallen off of their radar. He’s been waiting for over a year stuck in limbo with that rescue group and when we learned about his boisterous and charismatic personality, we offered to help so he can finally have his very own family that he’s waited so long to love.
Travis is a 2 year old German Shepherd mix with an exceptionally soft black and chestnut coat. His gorgeous amber eyes are soulful and tell his story. He’s on the smaller side of his breed at about 50 pounds, but has all of the characteristics of a true German Shepherd. He’s intelligent, active, has a willingness to learn and to gain acceptance from his people. His lighthearted personality and enthusiasm for the task at hand are fantastic qualities that he possesses. We have recently started working with him to teach him new commands and with his love of treats, we feel that given the right attention and training, this guy can learn anything you want to teach him.
The activities that Travis loves best so far include running through the huge play yard to investigate the smells and sounds, carrying around his favorite toys, playing with the other large dogs in our care and giving and receiving affection from the staff at our boarding facility. He would excel as a running, hiking or biking partner and would fit beautifully into a family that enjoys spending their free time outdoors. He does settle down nicely while indoors as well, but with his zest for activities, he will need daily exercise such as dog park visits and trails.
Many dogs that have been under socialized and disregarded in boarding for the majority of their lives often have a shortcoming that must be considered. Travis’ first 2 years have consisted of very little human or dog contact, but still he excels at all things social. It seems he is making up for lost time with his interactions now, but he has not come out of this situation perfectly. Travis has possessive issues over his food bowl when it is filled. He guards it when the food is in it and will growl to protect it. However, he has never bitten any of our team or anyone else during this protection mode. Once the food is gone, it is just a bowl and he doesn't have an issue any longer. This quality in a dog will often lead to his demise, but because that is the only issue that Travis suffers with and he’s exceptional in every other category, we’ve decided to press on and find him a family that will follow our guidance and simply feed him alone, in his closed kennel with the bowl attached to the door for easy removal. Travis knows the command SIT very well, which makes the situation much easier to manage when we must collect his empty bowl. We tell him to sit, which he follows, we open the kennel door and remove the easily accessible bowl. We do not feel that this flaw is reason to be put to sleep. If an owner can keep his kennel up for daily use and manage the proper routine for feeding, this can be safely controlled. It is imperative that he finds a family with older, understanding children that will not challenge his food issue. We’ve been working on this issue with him, but it will need long term training and precaution.
When Travis is hanging out with his people, he is described as a complete sweetheart and a joy to be around. He’s never met a stranger and would bond easily to any active and loving family. He is too fast paced to have a small dog, cat or toddler as a playmate, but would be overjoyed to have larger dogs and older children to socialize and play with. Travis is fully crate trained, housebroken, leash trained and stellar at the basic obedience commands he has already learned. He is more than appreciative for the life he currently leads, but we can only imagine how he will react when he joins a forever family that dotes on him and includes him in all of their adventures.
If you are interested in learning more about Travis or feel that he could be the companion you’ve been looking to add to your adventures, please email us at adoptions@reggiesfriends.org. He is neutered, microchipped, fully vaccinated and heartworm negative. He is available for out of state adoption and available to meet via video chat once an adoption application has been submitted. His adoption fee is $450 to help cover the cost of his airline flight, his travel crate, comfy bed and travel documents. Travis’ bags are packed and ready to go, so don’t hesitate to bring this active hunk of sweetness home.
