My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Luther is today’s dream dog. This is written by the volunteer who just could not turn away from this big guy who ended up in the city shelter.
____________________________________________________________________________
He’s one that will stick in my head for a long time......

When I went to get him out of his kennel, he wasn’t hiding under his shelf, he was laying down by the front of his kennel, but when I opened the kennel door to get to know him, it was obvious he just wanted to blend into the floor and make himself as invisible as possible. I kneeled down next to him, he wouldn’t look at me. His entire body just quivered, what a pathetic sight to see a big hulk of a dog reduced to that reaction.

These are the scary moments, because I have no idea if he’s a creampuff that will allow me to manhandle him a bit, or if he’s simply waiting for the right moment to remove my face.
Thankfully Luther, like most of the timid ones, is the former. I leashed him up, and with some serious prompting, got him to slowly walk out of his ward.

Once outside, as you can see in the first photo, he decided this spot next to the wall was perfect.
I could tell by then that he had no problem with me sitting next to him, petting him all over. He even wanted you all to see that he can balance a Pupperoni snack on his head!!!

When I put him in an outdoor run, I could tell it was a matter of minutes that we would see a different dog. Sure enough, Luther decided this outdoor stuff wasn’t so bad after all. I gave him about 45 minutes to decompress by himself, and I caught a glimpse of him just sitting in the sun, seeming to enjoy all the activity going on around him. He also did all his business outside like a good boy. He had plenty of opportunity to do it inside (many of the scared ones do), but he waited.
When I went to visit him again, I sat in a chair in the middle part of the run, and Luther wiggled right up to me. No hesitation. I realized how much I loved him at that very moment, because he is just the sweetest hulk who was waiting for an opportunity to show someone how much he can love. Vet Tech Tara (in the next two photos) came to visit. She tried to coax him outside with me earlier, and was so pleased to see the transformation.

This boy is a handsome, sturdy creature. He has great size, doesn’t need a pound on him. He has that big beautiful Lab/Pittie head, the best of both breeds’ dispositions. You can knock him around, there are no pressure points. He happily played along, craved the contact.
He seems to really like other dogs also. He had such a positive reaction meeting every dog, tail wagging, submissive almost, lots of kisses.

When it was time to put Luther back inside, he was a different dog. Leash went on with no problem, he walked like a champ next to me, no pulling, didn’t hesitate going into north or walking right into his kennel. By then, he was gobbling treats, so I left a bunch under his pillow, which he decided not to wait till bedtime to eat.

I love having that incredibly positive feeling about a dog. I walked away just thinking how important it was to get Luther out of the shelter and into a loving home.

If you’re looking for a strapping, handsome, loving lug, Luther is your man!
