Comments: Layla is just waiting to flash you her very best smile! Although it may look as though she’s snarling, we promise it’s just her special, toothy grin. :-) She came from the same puppy mill that Boomer, Little John, and Jazz came from, but she is definitely the most social female that came in. Layla is not just a pretty face. She is going to need an experienced owner willing to take on a project, as her years of living in the tiny cage at the puppy mill have given her some unique challenges. The first is housebreaking. Layla may never truly be housebroken, but in order to learn what to do, she will need a very patient person who is home most of the time who is willing to take her out (not just let her out) very regularly and praise her heavily when she does her business outside. Mill dogs are used to living in their own waste, so being conscious of their potty habits is completely foreign to them, and most lack even the instinct not to soil where they sleep, as they were never given the choice during their formative years. It’s ok to use a dog diaper initially as a training tool, but just like with humans, she cannot be left in a diaper all day. This leads to urinary tract infections and does not teach dogs not to go inside. Her new person will definitely have to be dedicated to working on housebreaking long-term, and have the patience to see it through despite the many accidents she will inevitably have while learning. Another unique challenge for Layla is that her time at the mill has made her very sensitive about being placed in a crate or small pen. She will pace herself bloody if not confined in the right type of area and given enrichment, so when she needs to be left unsupervised, it will need to be in a room with easy-to-clean floors and some things for her to do. Despite these quirks, Layla will be so worthwhile to whoever is lucky enough to make her a part of their family. She is as sweet as pie and keeps us laughing with her smile and silly antics. She LOVES to be held (though she still splays out awkwardly when picked up and takes a minute to relax) and cuddled and loved. Layla deserves to be treated like a princess, and loved like the sweet baby she is. If you think you can provide Layla with the home she deserves, please fill out an application today!
