My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.

This is Sierra. She is between four and five years old, has been spayed, and is heartworm negative. A Catahoula Cur mix, she would have been an excellent hunting dog. At one time she was someone’s good girl. Sierra is intelligent, quick, strong, and active. An excellent watchdog, always alert, she responds without prompt to noises and events that are not ordinary. She is an alpha type, likes to lead when we walk, wants to go out and in the door first. But she obeys “NO” and some other commands - sit, stay, down, off - such as that. She is excellent in the house, likes to sleep on the couch or bed, but I often find her napping in out of the way places, like behind a chair or in a closet. Sierra is not destructive, loves to chase a ball and enjoys her toys. She learns quickly and is food motivated.

She distrusts people and dogs until she gets to know them. Not necessarily a bad trait, but I’ve found it best to introduce her slowly, on a leash and behind me until I can gauge her response. She has never bit a person but will growl and bark. She can climb chain link fences - four and six foot. Her food bowl is one thing she will defend, but I can do what I choose. She may fuss but will not bite. I think it is because she was alone for so long.

When I picked her up she was starving on the side of the road. Heading home from Bodcau WMA, I made a turnaround and came back. I pulled over and waited until there was no traffic, called to her and she crossed the road. Tossed her a treat and said she didn’t have to live that way anymore, that she should come with me. She walked over and I put her in the backseat. Gave her water and more treats. She licked my hand and we came home. She kissed on the back of my head all the way. The next day she went to the vet.

That was March 28. She was 37 lbs., had all the worms - tape, round, hook, and heart; fleas and ticks, and an eye infection. Now at 57 lbs. with no parasites, Sierra is cat-quick and strong as a little bear. She has come long way. She loves me and I love her, but I have health problems and another dog - two are very difficult for me to manage. I want her to have a good home where she is loved and safe. She was so pitifully thin, and in such bad shape, and scarred. Some bad things happened to her. But she is very loving despite her past. I hope you will give her a chance. A life.

Sierra is a Louisiana Catahoula Cur all the way down to her bones. Notice her proud question mark tail in the video.  She may be a pure catahoula.  Many of the traits she has are basic to cur dogs.  She is a fantastic animal. You will fall in love with her.
