Here's what the humans have to say about me:
NINA
Female Shih Tzu-Yorkie
Age: 5 years old DOB: 1/10/2010
Wt: 11 lbs
Adoption Fee: $225
Thanks to our rescue partners at Louisville Metro Animal Services for contacting us about Nina. This precious girl was surrendered at the shelter because she had skin issues. When offered a financial voucher to help the owner pay for tests and care, the owner declined and signed over her dog. Nina is about 5 years old and probably didn't feel very good. About half of her hair was gone. In the interim, Nina has been fed grain-free food and received a few anti-fungal baths. Her skin has healed nicely and beautiful new hair is growing in.
This little girl has a great appetite and a happy personality. Once she started feeling better, it's like the genie was let out of the bottle. She dances when her foster parents come home, sits pretty for treats, loves to be petted and get some bellyrubs. Nina doesn't pay much attention to other dogs and would be fine as an only pet. Because she's a big-time chaser of squirrels, bunnies and birds, Nina requires a secure structural fenced yard. She might also be a car-chaser and this could be dangerous. She loves to be outside with her people, and when she gets "the happies" she zooms around in huge figure-8s with her ears flying and her tongue flopping. Her joy is contagious. She's still figuring out what to do with toys.
Nina has dry eye in her right eye. She needs daily eye drops in both eyes to ward off the onset of cataracts. This is a fairly common issue with Shih Tzu and we have learned about her dry eye before it has affected her vision. If her daily drops are not given (she doesn't mind them all that much) she will develop cataracts and could lose her vision.
Nina is housetrained if she is taken outside regularly. She will bark if left in a smaller crate, but not when she's in a very large crate. She's very affectionate beside you on the couch or in bed, and it seems that all she really wants is some people to adore. Nina will do well with kids over age 8, but not little ones. We don't know how she does with cats; she might try to chase them. Nina just wants to be the love of someone's life, and she deserves it.
