Here's what the humans have to say about me:
TOBY is a, young, purebred border collie. We estimate his age at 1.5 to 2 years. He is probably going to be around 45 to 50 pounds. He has gorgeous markings with that cute split face. He is quite the dog and all Border Collie… complete with the high energy level, pronounced herding drive, the “eye,” athleticism, and “the BC nip.” When outdoors on his foster farm his “on button” is his only gear. His primary interest focuses on “herding” the canine companions he shares his living quarters with. He is also intensely aware of, and interested, in the farm sheep and pigs. However, with his (and his foster mom’s) herding skills still unrefined he has not been allowed to practice on the livestock. But, for an experienced handler Toby would make a very good prospect for a working dog.
With all the animal stimulation on the farm keeping his attention, he has not shown an interest in playing with toys or the other dogs. But, in the right home, it is quite possible that Toby might come around to embracing other Border Collie “careers.” It is likely his attention could be refocused and retrained to Frisbee or agility in an environment where there aren’t other animals for him to focus on. He would also make a good running partner. Whatever the case, this boy is going to need a home where he gets a lot of exercise and stimulation.
Now, let’s talk about indoors. Toby the tornado actually has an “off switch” when it comes to indoor living (one exception…if there are cats in the house, then he is switched back to “on” mode. Best if he is in a home without cats). When inside Toby transforms into an affectionate, kiss-giving couch potato. He adores his foster mom and loves lying with her on the couch. He chills out even in the presence of his other canine brothers, who he obsesses over all day long outside! He is also comfortable in a crate. Good overall indoor companion!
Any quirks you ask? Of course. Have you ever known a border collie without quirks? Toby can annoy other dogs with his nip. More dominant dogs seem to put him in his place and this isn’t an issue with them whereas submissive companions might have a problem with this. Toby has a slight bit of food aggression (toward other dogs, not people). His foster mom is working with him on this and it is getting much better. He should be able to get over this with more practice. He doesn’t recall well when in herding mode. So, that can be a little frustrating. But, when not around other animals he is very responsive.
All in all, Toby is a great package for the right home! He has a wonderful friendly character, beautiful markings, intelligence, athleticism, intensity, willingness to please, desire to be around his human companions, and trainability. Due to his intensity and herding drive we think he would be best placed in a home with Border Collie experience. It could be a working farm or trialing home but doesn’t need to be. We think Toby would also thrive in a home without other animals to distract him, as long as his owner has the time and talent to redirect his energy and focus.
Toby has been completed vetted and is ready for his forever home. He is being fostered outside of Richmond, VA. He is neutered, up-to-date on shots, house broken and ready to roll. For more information about Toby you can contact his foster mom at lamblady.anne@gmailcom. (more photos coming soon!)
