Zach was also in bad physical shape when rescued. He was quite ill from his shelter experience, also had a broken pelvis from being hit by a car and on top of that has a fungal skin infection causing him to be smelly, itchy and uncomfortable. He required restricted activity, antibiotics and special baths three times a week for his skin.
Zach's personality has come to light with his recovery. He is a character! He loves to play with his ball toy. He carries it everywhere he goes. He occupies a run with his best friend Lena and gets along well with other dogs, too. Zach vocalizes for attention and is quite the talker! He even wrote his own biography! ;) Here is Zach's story in his own words.
One morning not long ago after I woke up, Dad told me to 'load up' cause he was taking me for a ride. Oh, boy! I just love rides but better than rides, I like being anywhere my dad is. I'll follow him anywhere. Dad took me to a place called a 'shelter'. I didn't know what that was but I was soon to find out, it was no place I wanted to be. Out of habit, I followed Dad inside and all the way back to where the homeless dogs are kept. "Hey! I don't belong here! I have had a home with my dad since I was six weeks old!" But Dad put me in one of those kennels all alone and left me there and he said something about not having "time" for me. Time? What is Time? I don't need much of that, just a little each day! I yelled for Dad not to leave, but he did anyway. I was so so sad.
The minutes turned to hours and hours turned to days. I lost my appetite and didn't even want to live anymore without my home. Someone must have told Dad that because after one week, he came back to get me!! Hooray! I was going back home.
Wrong! Dad didn't take me home, but took me to another place...someone else's home. It was called a 'farm'. Sure, it was better than that awful shelter, but still, it wasn't with my Dad and I still was not happy. I tried it out a couple of weeks 'cause that is what Dad said would make him happy, but I just couldn't stand it anymore and decided I would run-away.
I went from home to home, trying to find someone who would let me live with them. One lady even threw rocks at me to make me leave. And then it happened. A car ran right in to me. OUCH!! I was stunned and in so much pain! Finally I ambled onto a nice lady's property and she put me up and called for help. I recognized the people who came for me. It was the same ladies that tried to take care of me at the shelter. They loaded me up very gently. Then, they drove me back to the shelter with all the other homeless dogs. But this time they said, "We are going to get you some help, don't worry". They called my new friends, German Shepherd Rescue of Central Alabama. When they heard all that I had been through the past month, they came right up to get me! I worried what I could be in for next and was a little hesitant for a new adventure. But they told me it would all be 'allright'.
I went to a real doctor who checked me out from head to toe and told my new friends what I needed to get well. They gave me medicine, a new blanket and most of all love! Things are really starting to look up! I wag my tail and talk with my new buddies all day. I can't run and play with them yet, because my bones are still mending, but soon.... watch out!... this old dog is going to learn some new tricks! Can't wait to meet ya! Love, Zach
