Please meet Bear. He is being called Bear "Sr" because we currently have two Bears in rescue.
Bear Sr. is a purebred Newfoundland and he will be 8 years old in March of 2015. He is black, neutered, up to date on vaccinations and on heart worm and flea/tick preventative. He is a very tall drink of water but weighs in at a mere 114lbs.
This sweet boy does have some health issues; he has osteoarthritis in his hips, bilateral stifle disease and spondylosis of his lumbar vertebrae. Because he has had these issues for so long he is not a surgical candidate. His condition is being effectively managed via joint supplement and pain medication. He is not in any pain.
Bear is able to walk and run, sometimes he chooses to drag his rear-end from place to place rather than get up. He is able to sack out on the couch, a humans lap where ever it might be and has recently begun to explore (with great success) the counter tops so he is far from immobile!
He is currently living with several other dogs and has gotten along very well. Bear is generally very well behaved. He is housebroken, walks pretty well on a leash and is a good passenger (if allowed, he does enjoy the view from the drivers seat). He responds well to treats, a little to curious about other's food but he is correcting that. He has been very mild mannered with the humans he has met. He is a true gentle giant. His surrendering family said he was good with kids of all ages and cats.
Bear's weight will have to be monitored to keep extra pressure off of his hind-end, he will always have to be a "skinny newf". He will most likely always need medical management and supplements to ensure he remains pain free.
Bear is a special senior looking for someone special to love and cuddle with for the rest of his years!
Our adoption fee is $200.00 for seniors. A fenced yard with a minimum height of 4-feet is required for adoption.
