Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Hi, my name is Marci. I'm told I have the prettiest, warm, loving eyes. I know when I look at people who are sweet and kind to me, I probably do give them a look that makes their heart melt, because my heart feels full of love now that I'm safe from further mistreatment. I'm a bichon frise who was rescued from a puppy mill in May of 2013 after spending 8 years producing puppies for the pet industry. Since being sprung from this horrid existence, I've been learning how wonderful life outside a cage can be. I love my toys! I just love carrying them around in my mouth. My foster mom thinks that maybe I'm treating the toys like the babies that were taken away from me time after time after time. I often gather a bunch of toys and put them in my bed or kennel and cuddle with them. They give me comfort. So if you adopt me, you'll have to be sure to provide lots of soft toys for me!
I started out being fostered in the home of the people who run Safe Haven Bichon and Friends Rescue. I did well there and gained confidence, but since there were so many other dogs there, my rescuer, Margaret, felt it would be better for me to go to a foster home where I could get more one on one attention. I'm now in a foster home with only two other dogs, so I'm getting that extra attention to help me continue to learn to trust people and learn how to be a beloved pet.
When I'm held, I just melt into your arms and feel so lucky to feel the love and warmth of a human's touch. Back in the puppy mill, I never experienced that. My foster family is making that up to me right now! I do great with other dogs and learn by watching them, so it will be important for there to be another dog in my forever home to help me along. My foster brother and sister have taught me how to play with toys! I really enjoy exploring the fenced yard at my foster home and all the sights and smells I never experienced before. The fresh air is wonderful!
Since being rescued, I've been spayed, microchipped, heartworm tested (negative) and put on preventative, dewormed, vaccinated, and have had a dental cleaning. About a year after I was rescued, I developed a cataract in my left eye. I'm not blind in that eye. My right eye started to show signs of a cataract as well, so the rescue had me go through a laser surgery to help that eye and keep it from developing a cataract. This rescue is great! They do whatever medical care is needed, regardless of the cost. I'm being fed a high-quality food that doesn't contain any corn, wheat, soy, meat by-products or other low-quality ingredients, and I hope my new family will continue to feed me a high-quality food for the rest of my life. I'm being fostered in Cottage Grove, MN, and my adoption fee is $250. If you're interested in adopting me, please contact Margaret at loveforbichons@gmail.com to request an application.
The adoption process with Safe Haven Bichon and Friends Rescue includes an application, reference checks, and a home visit. We do not ship dogs/puppies on planes or send them on transports. Adopters are required to come to the foster home to adopt.
