Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Thunder is a charming, energetic athlete who needs an experienced home to bring him to his full potential.
This 1 year old Australian Shepherd is just looking for the right person to take him forward in life. Thunder was an owner turn in to a high kill shelter for herding small children and joggers. Both things that come natural to a high drive, young herding dog with little training or supervision.
Thankfully shelter personnel saw his potential and contacted rescue.
Herding dogs who are high energy and high drive (need to work) can be trained effectively once they blow off a little steam. Thunder is a dog who will need to exercise at high speed a couple of times per day either playing with a like minded dog in a fenced yard, perhaps chasing a tennis ball or even jogging on leash with his owner prior to going to work on obedience or agility. Given his high drive, he is a natural for chasing squirrels from the yard, but he will also chase cats. It is not known if he lived with cats or not, so a cat free home may be best.
He is highly food motivated and loves to learn. He has potential for agility and to be a hiking/walking partner. Thunder walks well on leash, but may pull a bit initially. He is learning about crate training, rides well in the car, is about 80% house trained (he needs a set schedule right now) and is as sweet as can be. He is working on his obedience basics.
This young dog needs to go to a home where he can continue his obedience training. He gets along with other dogs and perhaps meets new people with too much enthusiasm(he is learning to sit for introductions). His recall is good in an enclosed area and like most Aussies, he just wants to be with his people.
Thunder is neutered, up to date on vaccinations, has been treated for internal parasites, is Heartworm negative and on flea/tick prevention and on Heartworm prevention. Thunder's adoption fee is $450.00 and includes his health records. If you are interested in this lovely boy, please complete the application process.
