HAPPY 1st BIRTHDAY CHLOE!!!!

Chloe turned one last week and is in full on Paw-ty mode! She has been enjoying some special treats and new toys! Join in on the month long celebration:

Wow.....has it been a quick month since we last shared an update. We are 4 weeks out from Chloe's surgery and what a difference it has made. That back right leg is on the go. While she is still not weight bearing and may never walk, she sure is moving it a ton more and has even enjoyed laying on that side! In the cart she tries to place it while "walking" in the normal position. The rhythm isn't quite there but in time it may get better.

During recovery nothing has stopped her.....she was on the go and felt great to play. Luckily we had the cart to keep her moving safely. Unfortunately the weather didn't help much and we learned that she CAN get bored. Chloe loves to play games that keeps her mind stimulated and has learned some new "moves" physically (more to come in the next update).

Now that the weather is breaking we have been outdoors more. We started longer walks and are up to just over a mile at a time. She is happy and excited to go on walks and over time she will build the stamina to continue on longer walks. And let me tell you....these are not slow paced walks either!

Chloe has also found chasing after thrown toys and bringing them back to be thrown again is great fun! She can do this for a long time....get your arms ready.

Medical update: Chloe's stool came back clean....the whipworms are gone!

She continues going to rehab/therapy. We rotate between water treadmill, laser therapy and chiropractic sessions. She also tried acupuncture and did really well.

Age : 11 months (February 2015)

Chloe is doing fantastic! She continues to be such a sweetheart and really enjoys playing with other dogs and all people. Her newest accomplishment is walking up stairs. Of course that is with help in her sling but she loves to do it on her own. We haven't worked on going down the stairs but in time I am sure she will get it with no problem. We have open stairways in our house (upstairs and to a basement) neither of which she has indicated interest in going near unless helped.

She really enjoys snuggle time and scratches from anyone who with sit and rub her. Since she cannot scratch herself, she really appreciates the extra attention.....and boy can you see it in her face!

Chloe went on vacation for a long weekend while we were away. She stayed at a friends house and got to enjoy their dogs and BC puppy. I think she misses her pal to romp with!

A new favorite spot is basking in the sun by the back door and watching the wildlife. Chloe also really enjoyed the blizzard we had a few weeks ago and loved playing in the snow and digging to find her pinecones to flip around.

Health Update: The titer results came back and the medications she has been on have pretty much gotten rid of the Neospora. According to the lab experts the results may always indicate a presence of the disease but they are such low readings that they are considered gone. A 4th titer test after we finish this round of medications will tell us more. She is not contagious to humans or other dogs/animals.

We are also going to be rechecking her fecal to see if the whipworms are finally gone....more info on that this coming week.

BREAKING NEWS!!! Chloe had surgery on her back right hip. They did an FHO (femoral head and neck ostectomy) with the goal being to create a pain free fibrous joint. The surgeon and rehab therapist noticed significant bone to bone contact which might have been causing some pain. We are hoping this will allow her to want to lay on her right side as up until now she has only dragged and laid on her left side. She continues to be a good sport during recovery. Chloe is a good patient during icing and has continued to take more medications (for pain) without hassle. She is feeling so good that this is the first time we have had to crate her to keep her safe from herself (wants to scoot around and play tugs like normal). In a few days we can give her some freedom back but for now we are concentrating on healing.

Chloe will be at the Chicago Pet Expo in March and looks forward to meeting new fur-friends and hopefully her new family.

Ring in the New Year with Chloe!

Now that her wheels are here, she can GO, GO, GO! Chloe let's nothing stop her. She runs, walks and is great off leash! The wheels give her more mobility and to be in a position to gain strength and do everything any other dog can do.

Thinking that owning a special needs dog "wouldn't work for you"???? Think again! What are you really looking for in your next companion? If any of these are on your list, Chloe might be the girl for you!

So now you're thinking......but my house wouldn't work....Think again!!!
Do you have floors (hard wood or carpet)? She can scoot around and be where you are. She loves to pull toys out of the dog basket and fling them around. Squeakers are the best!

Do you have stairs.....we do! We have a second floor, basement and steps off the deck to the yard. Since she is petite at 28 lbs (and already full grown) she is easy to carry or walk in a sling. A ramp could also be made to fit the steps outside and she could go in and out on her own.

Worried about no fencing.....no problem....she is being fostered on a property where fencing is not allowed! Added bonus.....she likes to stay nearby and has great recall!

Worried about type of yard....no problem....she has all terrain wheels so she can go anywhere! This cart is specially designed so she can walk, run, swim, etc. She can go up and down hills, play on flat areas, hike in the woods over tree branches and even do agility.

Are you curious "how much extra work/time will she need of me"? Answer......less than housebreaking a puppy and a tad more than a "normal" senior dog. Things that take a little extra time are wipe downs after potty time (to keep her skin and fur clean.....literally 1 minute each time). Putting her in the cart takes 2-3 minutes for 1 person (drop the back legs in, swing the yolk over her shoulders, lock the pins and off she goes). Scoot shorts (if desired) 2-3 minutes. All of this is a few times per day or what works for your routine with her.

Thinking.....wow....how much is her adoption fee since she has all these things.....answer....the same as all our other wonderful dogs for adoption! Chloe will enter her new home with all the items that have been bought for and donated to her. Some of those items include:

Chloe has been with us 2 months now and what a different dog we see now. Her personality has really shined through with all that has been thrown her way. She still very much loves all people (young, adults and elders) and is just so sweet. For the past month she has undergone underwater treadmill therapy twice a week as well as 2 laser therapy treatments (hoping to loosen the muscles and gain blood flow). We are seeing more movement in her thighs and just recently we noticed she is trying to "walk" on her back right leg. While there is still no promise that she will be able to bear weight on the back legs we continue with PROM (passive range of motion) exercises and constantly are "training" her legs to be in the correct positions. Chloe has also been using both sides to lay on rather than favoring one side. We have also been working to get her in a sternal position more often which also helps position the legs correctly.

The Neurologist suggested we did some bloodwork and unfortunately one of the tests came back positive for Neospora which is a disease that affects nerves and muscles. Currently we are waiting for the results on the recheck to see if the antibiotics have helped or how we need to move forward. Sadly, this may have contributed to the cause of her hips dislocating and why she cannot walk. This is a very rare disease with not a lot of knowledge about it.

On a brighter note, her urinalysis came back clean and her bladder infection is gone. So while we continue to keep her on a potty schedule we have noticed she is able to hold it longer and is now giving signals to go outside when she needs to potty.

Her coat has transformed to a beautiful and shiny coat. Before she was patchy and very itchy. At one point we thought she had mange but tested negative. Where there was urine scalding is now fur as it should be. The inflamed areas are gone too. The huge laceration on her back leg leg is healed and the fur is back.

The most inspiring thing about Chloe is the fact that she doesn't let her handicap stop her from being an amazing sweet soul. We are convinced she doesn't even know that she is "different" from other dogs. She is fast and moves around like you wouldn't believe!

I am very excited to share that Chloe's cart has been ordered and is in the process of being made. We cannot wait to see her in her new found freedom! It will not only give her the ability to go for runs and longer walks but will help her use those back legs and strengthen those muscles.

I would personally like to thank everyone who has contributed to Chloe's progress. Wether with donations of bedding, toys, treats, etc or monetary it all has really been quite a blessing for her.

In April, Chloe was severely injured when tossed out of a moving car. When a Good Samaritan found her she was emaciated, full of worms and had some dogs bites on her besides the trauma from being hit by the car. The rescuer cared for Chloe until her own health didn't allow for her to care for Chloe anymore leaving her no choice but to relinquish her to rescue.

At the time of the injury, Chloe was only a 12 week old puppy. They cleared up the worms and the family loved on her. They did a fantastic job keeping her social and not breaking her spirit...she is gentle and accepts everyone!

Chloe has seen several medical professionals including our DVM, Surgeon, Physical Therapist and Neurologist. Currently she is up to date on all vaccinations and is being treated for a UTI, bacterial infection and whipworms. It was discovered in x-rays that both her hips are dislocated from the incident in April. We are working with the doctors and our goals with rehab are improving core strength, supporting and maintaining the strength of the front limbs and working on the pelvic limbs as much as possible hoping we can regain function. The hydrotherapy will also help muscle strength, improve joint range of motion and conditioning. We are also looking into support for her tarsal joints to work on weight-bearing exercises/standing.

Thursday November 6th we will start on the underwater treadmill. Stay tuned for updates on those experiences.

Over the past 3 weeks of having Chloe she has done fantastic! She is a real trooper and goes with the flow of things. She prefers to be a part of everything and enjoys attention from everyone she meets. Chloe loves the outdoors! She loves to go for walks (currently we help her with a sling), loves scooting around in the grass and flipping pine cones in the air followed by pouncing on them. Chloe loves other dogs and is trying to make friends with her foster sisters. Every person that she meets is greeted with tushy scoots of excitement.

At night or while we are gone she stays loose in our laundry room that is gated. She would prefer to be with her humans and let's out an occasional whine or bark but settles quickly and sleeps through the night. Come morning she is ready to play!

Inside play includes zipping around the furniture and going from squeaker toy to squeaker toy. After play time she loves to climb onto her cozy Big Barker Bed for some relaxation. Chloe's story was shared with the people at Big Barker. They generously sent a special bed for Chole and she LOVES laying on it! I have to tell you....this bed IS amazing! Have I mentioned.....Chloe has the BEST personality I have ever seen. She complains about nothing and takes everything in stride. She is always happy and listens fairly well. She knows her name, sit, wait/stay and lay down. We are working on coming when called and some other tricks. Chloe is VERY food motivated so it makes training that much easier!

Chloe is looking for a home that is patient, has time to attend to her extra needs and wants a friend to hang out with. While she is not overly time consuming each day she will require a little bit more than the average dog. She looks forward to working on tricks, chasing balls, long walks and snuggles on the couch....oh yeah.....and LOTS of squeaker toys! Chloe also loves romping in the yard, laying out in the grass on a nice day and being involved with what the family is doing.
