Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Ben was found in the Bronx with a heavy chain on his neck. He was taken to NYC AC&C and, at the tender age of 10 months, Ben found himself on the kill list. A rescue group saved his life but his foster home didn't work out and Ben was shuffled from foster to foster and then placed into boarding. Boarding is no place for such a young, intelligent dog.
Ben shut down. He became dangerously thin, non-responsive to people and totally obsessed with his ball to the exclusion of all else. It was his way of coping with the frustration, the loneliness, the boredom. His rescuers knew Ben needed a change, so he was moved upstate in hopes that a quiet country atmosphere and some individualized care would help Ben heal. It worked!
Ben is almost 4 yrs old, but he's like a great big puppy! He lives to play ball and will play fetch as long as someone will throw the ball for him. His favorite thing in the world, however, is love and physical affection. He loves to be petted, massaged, have his belly rubbed, be hugged, laid on, laid next to. He rarely jumps up, and he saves his kisses for his real friends.
Benjamin is super smart. He's been evaluated by 2 trainers. They both recommend Ben have a "Job" of some sort, even if it's carrying a back pack on walks...but he could certainly handle more of a job. He is highly trainable and has basic obedience training. (Sit. Stay. Down. Come. Heel. Give Paw. Wait. Drop it. Leave it.) He rides beautifully in a car.
Ben will thrive in a quiet, low key environment without kids and with a routine. He has been friendly with large, playful, female dogs but due to his size, a home without small dogs or cats is preferred.
