My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Jack is a 2 year old standard Australian Shepherd weighing about 40 lbs who came into ASRM as an owner surrender. He’s very energetic and loving. He wants nothing more than to have his persons’s love and attention. He is young, but he does very well with house rules when they are clear and enforced from the beginning. His attention span is improving all the time, and once he has his permanent home he will settle down even more into the house routine.

Jack has learned good leash manners with his foster mom. He gets excited to see other dogs, but has learned not to bark his opinion. He was not socialized with dogs before being fostered, so his interactions with a new dog should be slow and monitored for the first couple hours helps to make sure that no one gets offended at their personal space being invaded by this big goofball. Once acquainted, he is very friendly with dogs. He would be fine in a house with a cat that is not skittish. Since Jack is energetic at this age, he would be best suited to a home without toddlers, with children that are old enough that they can’t be knocked over by a silly 40 lb Aussie. Jack is also crate trained, and has never had an accident in the house.

He loves to play fetch, and is quite good at catching balls and Frisbees out of the air. He knows the basics of obedience such as sit, down, wait, stay, leave it. “Leave it” is his newest trick, because Jack has a very strong chase instinct. He loves to watch cats inside, squirrels, rabbits, birds, and even bugs in the yard, but has learned to make eye contact with foster mom to ask permission before chasing. Due to his high prey drive he will need to always be on leashed or in a fenced yard when he goes out.

Jack loves people and is always excited to see them. He catches on to new tasks or commands very quickly, and at the same time is a hilarious klutz. He loves belly rubs and has recently discovered the joy of chewing on bones. As long as he has a day filled with a combination of mental and physical exercise, belly rubs he is a happy boy who loves to shadow his foster mom from room to room. He has improved by leaps and bounds just in the couple months since he was taken into ASRM, and he can’t wait to find his forever family so they can share his continued progress with him.

Jack is neutered, current on vaccinations and microchipped. He is currently on heartworm preventative and frontline for flea and tick prevention.

Jack is being fostered in Central IL.
