PLEASE NOTE:  Tony is a special needs boy.  He is very anxious and always a flight risk.  Special pups need special heroes to step up and help them live their best lives.  Could you be Tony's hero?

Tony looks like he might be some sort of retriever mix boy and he’s sweet as can be … once he decides he doesn’t need to be afraid of you.  We have no background on him … only know that he and his sister were surrendered to an Animal Control facility.  Both have had severe anxiety issues.  

Tony has always been very wary and anxious with new people and new situations.  It takes him a while to warm up to new people.  Even after much time in foster care he will still only sometimes take a treat directly from the hand of someone in his foster family. 

Tony will do best in a quiet, settled home.  His perfect family will have lots of doggy experience, patience, and time to spend teaching him just how great life can be when somebody loves you! He is such a handsome boy, and it is heartbreaking to see him so anxious around people.

Here are some very important things you need to know about Tony

Approximate age/birthdate:  ~ December 2013

Weight/size: 55-60 pounds
 
Housebroken:  working on it ... his extreme anxiety makes it a little hard for him to focus and he may piddle a little if he gets scared

Crate trained:  working on it … being crated is not his favorite place to be, but as long as things stay calm, he does ok.

Personality: EXTREMELY shy and anxious, sweet boy who wants to be loved

Energy level:  medium ... but he still has bursts of lab energy

Fenced yard required?:   YES … ABSOLUTELY ... NO EXCEPTIONS ... and it must be a physical fence, not an underground fence. He is so scared of people that he would definitely escape at the first opportunity. (He went to a new home once before and had to come back to rescue because he would jump the fence, and it was very difficult to get him back into his yard.)

Does he/she jump fences?  YES ... especially if he is extremely stressed. We know from past experience that he can and will jump a fence.

Leash walk:  He is still not totally comfortable walking on leash but is getting better.  You must be sure to have him in a very secure harness and use a sturdy, fixed-length leash.

Obedience training:  NO but he does know 'sit'

Riding in vehicles:  RIDES OK … a little scared at first, but settles quickly 
 
Spayed/neutered:   YES

Up-to-date on routine vaccinations:   YES

Microchipped:   YES

Social with other dogs:  YES but must be supervised when he is with other pups, even after slow, proper introductions.  He is easily intimidated, but he will defend himself when challenged.  He should never be left unsupervised with smaller dogs. 

Social with cats:  NO CATS ... he would do them harm

Good with children: He will do best in a calm, settled environment and the activity and noise levels with young children would be overwhelming for him.

We are an all-volunteer group, so please be patient and understand that it takes an average of 7-14 days to process the applications including reference checks, follow-up questions and home visits.  We make every effort to move through them as quickly as possible.

When your application is approved, we will schedule a meet-and-greet to see if Tony picks you too.

If it seems that the adoption will be a good match for all, there is an adoption fee, and an adoption contract to be signed.
