Here's what the humans have to say about me:
STONE is a 2 year old black male with cropped and standing ears. He came to us from a shelter after his owners moved away and couldn't find a home for him. Stone is very thin at 127 pounds and needs to gain 10 pounds before he can be neutered. He's a very quiet dog - we haven't heard him bark yet. He's very mellow too, but that may change as he starts to feel better. He's fine with the male and female Danes in his foster home, but he doesn't seem interested in playing with them. Again - it may be due to his health, because he's not playing with any toys yet either. Despite his looks, he's a great eater - he currently gets four meals a day. He'll come up and head butt you for 3 minutes of attention and he goes and lays down for the next hour. He's not completely house broken. If you take him out on schedule, he won't have any accidents, but he doesn't know how to ask to go out. He's mastered coming in the dog door, but not going out. He's excellent with kids 8 years and up and large dogs, but we don't yet know about small dogs. Cat's are unknown. He's got some scarring on his left eye, but we don't know if he's blind or not. He's definitely got some impairment, but it's too soon to say if it's permanent (though we suspect it is). He'll be getting it looked at on Monday. Even with his limited vision in that eye - he doesn't startle much. Stone came to MAGDRL in February 2008.
Update 2/28/08 - Stone is eating like a horse and is much perkier than when he first came into rescue and appears to slowly be gaining weight. Stone's vet suggested temporarily tacking back his eyelids to see as he gained weight if he'll need entropian surgery, which we have done. We suspect he will need the surgery, and if so, it will be done at the same time he is neutered. Stone definitely has some visual impairment in his left eye and it's unlikely that it will improve. He has a little scarring on his right eye, but he doesn't seem to have any trouble seeing. While he's more animated when he first came to rescue, he's still not terribly playful. He is great with other dogs, but doesn't actually interact with them much. He's just now starting to play with toys and is enjoying de-stuffing them.
Update 3/23/08 - Stone continues to slowly improve since coming to MAGDRL. While he hasn't gained very much weight - his body condition is MUCH better. His muscle tone, skin, and overall activity have all improved greatly. Zoey, another MAGDRL foster, has been with us on and off for the past week and Stone has become a playful youngster again. He rarely plays with our two 7 year old Danes, but he loves to play chase with Zoey (but she ALWAYS wins!). Stone has been neutered and had surgery on his third eyelids. He will probably still need one final surgery on his upper eyelids, but this should be minor. It may be awhile until he's ready for that, so it might be something his new family will have to have done. Even after his final surgery, he will probably always need to have his eyes wiped clean at least twice a day, but he's clearly much more comfortable than he was when he arrived. Stone is just an all around nice dog to live with. He's snuggly and playful when your ask for it, but he's equally content to just lay quietly nearby.
Update 4/4/08 - Stone was ready for his final eye surgery quicker than we thought, so it was completed today. He is recovering well. We have found that Stone won't do the stairs in his foster home. We feel it may be due to his vision impairment. The stairs are carpeted, fairly dim and have a right angle midway at the landing. He will do wide outdoor concrete stairs, with right angles - though he's a bit clumsy at them. We're working with him to find out which (if any) indoor stairs he will do.
