My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Updated Bio 05/15/14: Stevie is a 3 yr Old 7.9 pound Yorkie mix (possibly Schnorkie) being fostered outside of Atlanta. Stevie was rescued by a heroic woman who found Stevie and a couple of larger dogs neglected and being systematically starved to death by new occupants of a property after the original owner abandoned them. Stevie was most likely born with genetically defective eyes that never fully developed. Stevie had no eyelids and no discernible vision in either eye and needed constant attention with lubricating drops. Stevie’s eye doctor has decided it would be best for Stevie to if the eyes were removed to prevent infection and relieve the constant irritation. Stevie’s operation was successful and he has fully recovered! He is healthy and has a typical 3 year old fearless playful puppy personality. What Stevie likes most is sitting next to or on top of his person. He loves to play with his squeaky toys and would love a friend who would play gently with him. Stevie is very affectionate, friendly, smart and playful and once he memorizes his surroundings he gets along extremely well. Surprisingly, Stevie is very well house trained. He holds it like a champ until someone can take him out back and set him down in the grass. Stevie makes up for his lack of sight with extremely sensitive hearing and a super keen sense of smell. Stevie does not navigate down stairs but he can climb up them and he jump up into your lap and loves to sit on the back of the sofa where he can hear everything. Stevie is fine with cats and other dogs and presumably would be fine with children old enough to know how to care for a little guy with special needs. Stevie wanted to add something in his own words:

They tell me that I can’t see but I don’t ever remember ever being able to see much. I do remember being cold or hot and always hungry and lonely but that memory is fading fast. I used to have irritated spots on my head that always itched and were sore. But now after seeing the Dogtor I feel great! I can always find my person no matter how quiet they think they are. I will even look for them up the wooden hill inside the house but I can never get back down. It seems so much further on the going down side. Fortunately someone always comes to rescue me. Will you come to rescue me? I love my foster family but what I want more than anything is a forever home where people will let me love them with all my heart and not be afraid of me because I’m different since I don’t have eyes. I don’t need eyes to give you my heart. I’m waiting but please don’t take too long! Smell ya later!

INITIAL BIO: 04/03/2014

MEET STEVIE! Stevie is a 3 year old, 7.9 pound Yorkie mix (possibly Schnorkie); he is being fostered outside of Atlanta.

Stevie was rescued by a heroic woman who found Stevie and a couple of larger dogs neglected and being systematically starved to death by new occupants of a property after the original owner abandoned them. Stevie was most likely born with genetically defective eyes that never fully developed. The congenital abnormalities in both eyes have resulted in non-functional vision, exposure from lack of a functional blink, with subsequent discharge and discomfort. When he was found, his hair was so badly matted it wasn’t even clear that he had eyes. Stevie’s has visited a doggie ophthalmologist, who has recommended that both eyes be removed to prevent infection and irritation. Currently, Stevie’s eyes must be moistened repeatedly during the day with eye drops.

Despite his special needs, Stevie has no other apparent issues. He is now healthy and cleaned up and his 3-year-old fearless playful puppy personality cannot be denied. While Stevie wants to sit in his person’s lap as much as possible, he also loves to play with his squeaky toys, too. Stevie is very affectionate, friendly, smart and playful and once he has mapped and memorized his surroundings, he gets along extremely well. Stevie does not navigate stairs, but he can jump up into your lap. Stevie is fine with cats so far and presumably would be okay with children over the age of 14 as long as they are instructed on how to care for a little guy with special needs.

Stevie wanted to add something in his own words:

“Hi Yorkie lovers, it’s me Stevie! They tell me that I can’t see, but I don’t ever remember ever being able to see much. I do remember being cold or hot and always hungry and lonely. I had doggie friends who were much bigger than I was, but they were also cold and hungry and we all lived in a small overgrown patch of weeds with a chain link fence. It was a sad time. I was saved by a very persistent lady who took me home with her and gave me food and a bath and lots of love. She was there to rescue my bigger brothers and was told that she wouldn’t want me since I was blind. She took me anyway and I’ve never been so happy in my entire life. Now there’s always food and water and a lap to lay in, and at night instead of sleeping in the piles of trash I was used to sleeping in, I have a person to sleep next to. I couldn’t be happier! They tell me that someday I’ll have a forever home and a forever person to be mine for the rest of my life. I didn’t think it was possible, but I think that I might be even happier when I get to finally go home with my person. If you are my person, please hurry up and come get me. I can’t wait to smell you and make you my own!
