Here's what the humans have to say about me:
UPDATED BIO 5/06/14 Snickers is an 8 year old (approximately) 9 pound yorkie or yorkie mix that was rescued from a high kill shelter. His owners did not care enough about him to use flea medication, resulting in a flea infestation on the little guy. He had open sores, was anemic and missing patches of fur. However, within weeks of becoming flea free, his fur started growing enough so he could be groomed, and today, you would never know he used to be balding.
While Snickers is a pretty mellow kind of a guy, he is also very playful! He loves to play with his fur brother, and now that there is another dog to play with, he is playing with the new guy as well. Every morning he has his play time, and then he goes on his walk, which keeps him happy for the rest of the day. He is also very good at entertaining himself, and will quietly chew on a bone.
Snickers gets along with other small dogs, and cats (as long as they don't run from him, then he thinks it's playtime), but he is cautious of larger dogs. He is also cautious of things or people he isn't initially familiar with, but once he realizes they mean him no harm, he is fine. Snickers does need to be on flea medication all the time and be completely flea free, due to his flea allergies. He is still scratching and chewing himself a bit more than he should be, so we have changed his diet to a grain free food in hopes that will help. We don't know if he has further allergies, and while it is not severe at all, it is something to keep in mind.
While Snickers will use the potty outside, we have learned he will also use pee pee pads - it seems he might have been trained with them. Please don't pass this little guy up because of his age. His age is estimated, and he is very playful! He would do very well in a household with other small dogs that are playful.
Here is a video of him playing with his fur brother and his new little foster brother Clooney (who is also up for adoption!)
Updated Bio-3/26/14 Snickers is 8 years old and weighs 8.5 pounds, He is being fostered in West Palm Beach, FL.
Snickers was rescued from a high kill shelter where he had been turned in by his owner. Lucky for him, UYR responded to the call for rescue him from the shelter. When he was surrendered he had severe fleabite dermatitis.
Snickers is a very mellow sweet dog. He has only been in his foster home a short time, but has adjusted very quickly. He gets along fine with his foster brothers and sisters, however he does like to harass the cats, so a cat free home, or a home where the cat is the boss, would be best. He is not totally house trained yet, and if not taken out in time, will potty in the house. But he is learning and has had less accidents in the house.
Snickers saw the vet this week for a dental and an exam. He lost a couple of teeth, but still has many left, and his appetite is just fine. He had open sores and missing fur from his flea infestation. Now with proper treatment, all the sores have healed up and his fur should grow back in no time at all. He gets medicated baths once or twice a week, and is on oral flea control. He has already almost completely stopped chewing on himself and scratching. He is such a sweet little fellow and has taken to following his foster mother around.
Snickers is going to be just beautiful when his fur grows in. Maybe yours would be the perfect home for this very deserving little guy.
UPDATED BIO 3/06/14: Snickers is an 8 year old, 8.4 lb Yorkie being fostered in West Palm Beach FL. Snickers was was surrendered to a local shelter. He came in infested with fleas and missing much of his fur due to flea allergies. He is now on oral flea medication, anti - itch medication and getting medicated baths to help clear up a secondary skin infection. He might look a little funny now, but we can see he is a diamond in the rough - he is going to be adorable when his fur comes in. He should look like a completely different dog in a couple of months.
He went to the vet this week, and his blood work showed he was anemic from all the fleas he had on him. He had a dental and lost a couple of teeth - and the vet said he had a lot of fur in between his teeth. He is getting high quality food and being kept parasite flea, so his anemia should subside soon.
Snickers is very easy going and mellow. He has tried to play with the cats a little as well as with the other dogs, but they were not impressed. He has pretty good manners as well, we are pretty impressed with him! He is however, not completely 100 % housetrained, so we are working on that. He likes to snooze on the couch and sleep on the bed, and say hello to new people he meets. He is a friendly little dog who would do well in a household with children over the age of 13.
