Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Candy is a 3 to 4 year old Dachshund/Spaniel mix. She weighs approximately 12 pounds. She came to the shelter near the end of November with a group of pups. She was completely shut down, segregating herself from those pups and did not respond to human touch. She has been in foster care since mid December, 2013. Candy is afraid to be touched but will accept being touched and has opened up tremendously in the past two months. She will submissive tinkling if she is scared enough. She has a stronger fear of men so it is recommended that she be in an all female household.
At the foster home Candy has become use to being on a leash while running around the house. This makes it easier to catch her but also allows her to become use to having a collar and being leashed. She has done well with this. She has also allowed me to approach her in the house even though it scares her, she will put her paw in my hand to let me pick her up. She has taken walks in the yard on the leash successfully but she did not want to do her potty in front of me so she needs more work in this area.
Candy has two little fenced in yards at this foster home that she is use to going into. She usually does her potty while in them but not if your looking! There is also a bigger yard that is fenced that she gets exercise in. She is hard to catch because she runs away when approached. She has gotten better over the past two months but she still runs away. She does better dragging the leash because you can step on the leash to catch her.
Her fear factor is unexplained. It is unknown what she experienced in her earlier life. She is very sweet and will relax on your lap while you watch TV. She likes to sleep on the dog bed next to me while I work on my computer. She wants to be close but with a distance she feels is safe. Other times she will seek my attention by barking at me from a distance as if she is trying to communicate or trying to get me to get up and go to her but then she runs!
Candy accepts other dogs and will run and play with them. She carries her tail high and wiggles and wags while playing. She appears to be very happy and fun loving while playing with the other dogs.
I keep her on a schedule of going outside every couple hours because she doesn't appear to be housebroken. She has done pretty well with this schedule and has only had a couple of accidents in the house not counting her fear episodes when I try to pick her up.
This foster home feels she will continue to interact and reduce her fear if she is placed in a forever home with loving people who are willing to give her the space and time she needs.Please, you MUSTpaste following link into your browser BEFORE emailing for further information.
