Here's what the humans have to say about me:
This is McCaela, AKA, The Turtle!
Turtle is in our Utah foster program, a program dedicated to helping victims of dogfighting.
She's from a Jan 2013 fight bust in Toledo Ohio, and she and the other five dogs rescued with were nicknamed "The Fearing Six" because they came from an abandoned house on Fearing Street.
Police busted the Fearing St home in Toledo as part of a drug investigation only to find a house where no people lived. Six dogs in total were found chained and kenneled on both levels of the two-story home. The situation was very grim. Paraphernalia indicative of dog fighting, such as a wooden treadmill and veterinary supplies were abundant throughout the house. McCaela and the other dogs were in very poor shape, extremely thin and scared up.
Upon at the shelter the dogs were very timid and in poor condition. They were all underweight and their coats were marked with scars. Their feet were caked with feces and urine from living in their own filth, and their bellies were filled with worms. Two of the dogs had legs that were previously broken and healed improperly on their own, due to the lack of veterinary care. At the shelter the veterinary staff was able to document and tend to their wounds and ailments, and they began to heal.
Fast forward ten months - the owner was found guilty and charged for dog fighting for five out of the six dogs and the future was starting to look bright for these special dogs. They patiently waited at the shelter, getting loved and cared for by the shelter staff while gaining weight and receiving the much needed care that was lacking before arrival.
Turtle is black/brown and white, 4-5 years old and shows evidence of having been used for breeding. She is very scared and is missing a portion of her right ear. She got her nickname, Turtle, because âshe will just roll over onto her back and wants for nothing more then to be petted and loved onâ%9D.
The Turtle may be able to have a dog friend eventually. Her preliminary dog tests showed potential for her to get along with the right dog, but an intro with her will take patience and time. She needs a foster or adopter in the Salt Lake City area to help her continue to heal and learn to love life as a normal dog!
