My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

02/22/02015 PLEASE CONSIDER BUTTERCUP

A home for Buttercup and her brother Bear continues to elude them. If you are looking to adopt, please don't overlook these unfortunate little waifs. She and her brother Bear have been waiting for a family to call their own for way too long and we pray they find their new homes soon. We implore you to give Buttercup and/or Bear a chance.

11/2/14: Buttercup’s Potential Is Limitless

Buttercup is now 10 months old and she has fully recovered from her bout with the deadly parvo virus with no lasting ill effects. Unfortunately, for one reason or another, Buttercup has not been adopted. Like many plain brown dogs of mixed breed genre, they are sadly often overlooked. NBR was able to save her life but Buttercup needs you to change her life.

Buttercup is desperately seeking someone to give her the chance to blossom into a faithful companion and family member. She needs people who will give her the kind of attention that she has never had, and will need some direction in the beginning weeks. Consistency and patience will be imperative. Buttercup is not fully housebroken and will need someone who is home for the better part of the day - a fenced yard would be a plus.

As with most dogs, Buttercup will thrive once she is on a schedule and adjusts to life in a loving home. Just take a look at her brother Gordon who was adopted by a wonderful family to see Buttercup’s potential.

03/01/14: 5 Pups With Parvo - NBR Was Their Only Hope To Live

We received a call from an emergency hospital asking us if we would take a 12 week old Boxer mix puppy that was critically ill. His name was Zeus and he was diagnosed with the deadly parvo virus. We were informed he was one out of a litter of five, however, the other four pups were home with their mom and not yet showing any symptoms.
According to the vet, the hospital had contacted 12 other rescue organizations trying to find someone to help; we were the only rescue to respond. The hospital would not begin treatment until they received full payment. We were quoted $2500 for Zeus’ treatment and although our funds were low we could not turn our backs and let him die. We paid the bill and gave the go-ahead to the doctor to begin treatment.
Within 12 hours all the pups at home were becoming violently ill with bloody diarrhea and vomiting…the same symptoms as Zeus. We were told if we did not take the remaining pups they would most certainly all die. We were their only hope. We felt we had no choice and agreed to take the remaining four puppies: Buttercup, Bear, Petunia and Gordon.
It was touch and go over many days for all five pups, but we are elated that they all survived. Zeus and Buttercup were the first to recover, and the first to go to a foster home. They are thriving and live with two other boxers that give them needed socialization skills and plenty of exercise. The remaining three pups (Bear, Petunia and Gordon) are finally completely recovered as well. They are still being boarded at the vet hospital. They are ready to be moved into a foster home or their adopted homes.
All five of the dogs are sweet and affectionate. The staff at the vet hospital cannot say enough about them. They all get special attention and they love to run around the office (when it’s slow ;-). They are taken outside for a little walk every two hours. All three of them are doing great on housebreaking and have very nice leash manners.
We are making arrangements for all five pups to be spayed/neutered. The doctor recommended scheduling their surgery in another week since they just received their final vaccines.
The medical cost for the care of these five pups has reached well over $9500. Sadly, we will not be able to take in any other dogs with medical issues until we can replenish our bank account. The extra donations we received during the Holidays are barely keeping us afloat. We have had to turn down several dogs these past weeks that had critical needs because we do not have the resources to help them. Please remember that we cannot do what we do without your support, and we need you now more desperately than ever.

2/17/14: Update from Buttercup and Zeus's foster home:

"The puppies are doing very well. They are getting better at house training. We have not gotten them to "tell us" they need to go but they are better at not just going anywhere. We are able to schedule (every hour or so) them to go out. Today, Zeus did go to the door and scratch and when he was let out he went poop! What a good boy!.

We had to go out for an hour yesterday and then were wonderful in the crate. Went right in and no crying as we left them. When we returned there were no pees or poops either!

They are very smart puppies and learn very quickly. They understand what "leave it means" and will sit on either verbal or hand command.

They love to play with their foster brothers and will play for hours either inside or out. They have taken to playing in the snow as well.

They are partially converted from the prescription food and should be all set by the weekend.

They love to cuddle with anyone who will have them - human or canine!"

01/20/14: The two pups who were doing well yesterday continue to do well....no diarrhea or vomiting and they are eating. The three other pups are all doing worse today....lots of vomiting and bloody diarrhea, and not eating. They tried giving them a little food with a syringe but it came right back up.

The puppies have been referred to at the CT vet as pup #1 #2 #3 #4 and #5. They actually have names. Pup #1 is a male and his name is Zeus. Pup #2 is a male and his name is Gordon. Pup #3 is a female and her name is Buttercup. Pup #4 is a male and his name is Bear. Pup #5 is a female and her name is Petunia. Zeus and Buttercup are the two pups who are doing well. Gordon and Petunia are the two who are in the worst condition although Bear has deteriorated since yesterday as well.
