Here's what the humans have to say about me:
UPDATED BIO 05/06/2014: Buttons is a 15.5 year old 4.5 lb Yorkie that is being fostered in West Palm Beach Florida. Buttons is blind, almost deaf, and senile. She is a little sweetheart who just wants a comfy bed to sleep in, food to eat,(she loves to eat!) and occasional pigs ear to chew :) She might have been house trained at one point, but now, she no longer is.
Buttons does have dry eye, so she is on prescription medication to help with that, and she will need that for the rest of her life. She also has a collapsed trachea, so she does cough a little sometimes. Other than that, she is fairly healthy for such a senior dog. Since she is senile, she really is in her own little world, and not a cuddly little dog. She is comfortable in her own surroundings, but she gets agitated when she goes to the vet, or gets taken out of what she is familiar with, so we are looking for a home within a short driving distance from south Florida. Her optimal home would be with someone who has experience with senile dogs and dry eye.
UPDATED BIO 03/06/2014: Buttons is a 15.5 year old 4.5 lb Yorkie that is being fostered in West Palm Beach Florida. Sadly, sweet Buttons lost the home she planned to live out the rest of her life in when her owner had to go into a nursing home. Buttons is very healthy considering her age, and her appetite remains good, although sometimes she does need to be persuaded to eat with a little chicken. Buttons is almost deaf, and blind, and gets daily eye drops to help keep her eyes moist. She does not bark, and is pretty easy, she basically sleeps most of the time. She might have been housetrained at one point, but now she gets up and walks around and does her business wherever she happens to be. She is no longer walking around the house aimlessly, so we know when she is up and about sometimes is going to happen - she is either hungry, thirsty or has to use the potty. Due to her senility, she really doesn't interact with people. Buttons is looking for that special home and owner that understands she just needs somewhere safe and warm to spend the days snoozing away. Could that be you?
UPDATED BIO 02/05/2014: Buttons had her dental on the 3rd of February and lost 12 teeth! She has sutures where two of her upper teeth used to be so she doesn't develop an oral nasal fistula. She now has 2 teeth left, but her tongue currently isn't sticking out like it does with other toothless dogs. Buttons was groggy for longer than normal after her dental, and developed a bad tummy, but now she seems to have recovered.
One of the first days we had Buttons, she surprised us by chewing on a bone. She hasn't done that since, but it was very cute and we were able to get a little video of it. Please click the video link to see her and her bone.
INITIAL BIO 02/01/2014: MEET BUTTONS! Buttons is a tiny, 4 lb 15 1/2 year old (yes you read that right!, born August 13, 1998) senior Yorkie. Her owner was moved to a nursing home and no longer able to properly care for her little dog, and when UYR found out about Buttons plight, we knew we were her only hope.
Buttons is an old dog, there is no sugar coating it. She is blind, and she is hearing impaired, and she is also senile. The good news is, that she is healthy! She had a senior blood panel done, and it came back normal. Her teeth are not in good shape, however, and on February 3rd, she is going to have a dental and probably lose a lot of her teeth. Her eyes do appear to not have optimal tear production, but we are giving her inexpensive over the counter eye drops to help keep them lubricated.
Buttons is a quiet dog, and doesn't bark. For the most part, she sleeps a lot. She does get up to potty, drink water and eat, and do her "rounds", walk aimlessly, or in a circle for a little exercise. If she is not taken out, she will potty on the floor.
Buttons is not a dog for everyone. She is in her own world, and not a typical cuddly dog. We are looking for a home that has prior experience with senile dogs, as well as someone that is home part of the day. Other small dogs are fine, but because of her tiny size, we are looking for household with children over 16. She just needs an understanding, experienced home where she can spend the remainder of her days.
