I would like to introduce sweet & well mannered Keeiko. She is four years old and weighs approx. 30 lbs. As you can tell by her picture, she is not a purebred, but what she lacks in pedigree, she makes up for in personality.
Keeiko came to me timid and hand shy. Her previous owner, due to unfortunate circumstances was unable to keep her. He filled me in on her sad start to life as he adopted her from a shelter at eight months old with a history of abuse. A little unsure and lonesome for her loving owner, she took some time to bond with me. But now she has really emerged from her shell recently with whole new level of affection and animated personality. She will answer you when you ask her a question and she will even sing for treats if you prompt her to.
Keeiko is also very nurturing with my two rambunctious Boston-girls and has almost assumed a mother-type position in the pack. It is really quite heartening to watch her scold the girls when they get out of line or play too rough. She also would protect my cat snoopy from the ever-pestering six month old Darla (The youngest and most mischievous of my two Boston’s) by blocking her when she would try to bug him. He passed away May 22nd at the ripe old age of 19 and Keeiko sat with him in the back yard and attempted to come and get me three times before I noticed he was in trouble. She wouldn't let the other dogs come near old Snooper until I told her it was okay. That in itself is truly a remarkable quality. It is comforting that they were able to bond so poor Snoopy had a friend at his side when he went to the bridge.
I love that I can leave her free to roam the house while I'm at work and I don't have to worry about destruction or accidents when I get home. She is perfectly content to lounge on her bed in front of the fireplace and patiently wait for my return.
The only thing that may pose a concern is her reluctance to accept other dogs. It takes a few well supervised meetings on a leash before she can be trusted around her new friends. But that being her only fault that comes to mind, someone who would be content with only one dog in their family and with leash walks only will absolutely love her. And who knows, they may be able to try some techniques that I haven't thought of to make her more at ease when in situations requiring socialization.
The right family is out there for her, and in the mean time, I am enjoying every day our family shares with her. Keeiko is an absolute joy to have in our home and I am so proud of how she has blossomed. She will make the right family a loving companion for many years. I think I shall miss her terribly when that day finally comes.
With utmost sincerity,
Keeiko's foster mom,
Ande
