The best thing about mutts? Everything. These pups come in all shapes, sizes, and colors because they're a combination of different breeds. What mutts (also called mixed-breed dogs) lack in pedigree, however, they make up for with personality. They are as loving, faithful and eager to please as any purebred dog. Mutts tend to be healthier, too. Even better, shelters are full of mixed-breed dogs and puppies just waiting to be adopted.

How long do mutts live?

Mutts have a lifespan ranging from eight to 18 years. Several factors can influence their longevity, including size, health, diet, and veterinary care. Smaller dogs often live longer than larger breeds, and genetic predispositions to certain health conditions can affect lifespan.

When do mutts stop growing?

Mutts typically stop growing in height around their first birthday. However, they may continue to fill out and gain weight for a few more months.

Do mutts shed?

Yes, most mutts shed. Just like some purebred dogs shed more than others, some mutts are more prone to shedding. Mutts who have Poodle, Maltese, Lhasa Apso, and other low-shedding breeds in their backgrounds may shed less than mutts who are a mix of heavy-shedding breeds such as the Golden Retriever, Akita, or German Shepherd Dog.

What colors are mutts?

Some mutts come in solid colors such as black, white, brown, red, cream, and gray, while others have stripes (brindle) or spots or patches in shades from white and blue to black and tan.

How big do mutts get?

Mutts range in size from minuscule to massive. There is nothing average about mixed-breed dogs, including their size. You can find mutts that will fit in purses and mutts that take up the entire sofa and all sizes in between.

What do mutts look like?

Mutts have unique and unpredictable looks. Some may have floppy ears that hang down like a Cocker Spaniel, while others may have pointy ears that stand up straight like a Husky. And let’s not forget about their coats — mutts can come in all sorts of colors and patterns, from spotted to solid, curly to straight, and everything in between.

Mutt temperament

Learn about about the Mutt temperament and how well they fit into your lifestyle, home environment, and family.

Are mutts good with other dogs?

Mutts can be great companions for other dogs, but it really depends on the individual dog’s personality and socialization. Just like people, dogs have unique temperaments, and some may be more social than others.

Are mutts good with cats?

Yes, mutts can often be taught to live in harmony with cats and other pets. It all comes down to temperament and training. Shelters and rescues can often “cat test” dogs to determine if a dog will make nice with a cat. The earlier dogs are introduced to cats, the more likely they are to feel comfortable with feline friends.

Do mutts have better temperaments?

The idea that mutts have better temperaments than purebred dogs is a common misconception. While it’s true that many mutts are incredibly friendly and well-adjusted, a dog’s temperament is influenced by their breed makeup, training, and socialization.

Some mixed-breed dogs are lap-dogs, while others would rather run laps. Some are quiet and polite, while others are vocal and gregarious. Mutts can be confident or shy, active or lazy, adaptable or anxious — every component of their temperament varies from one mutt to the next.

What is an advantage to mutts?

One of the advantages of mutts is their genetic variability. Adopting a mixed-breed dog means that some of the more intense traits of the breeds from which they descend can be, well, less intense. A mutt might look like a Border Collie but be less energetic and focused. Or maybe they share physical traits similar to those of a Yorkshire Terrier, but aren’t as vocal. There is no way to really know what a mutt’s temperament will be like until you spend time with the dog.

Do mutts bark?

Yes, mutts bark just like any other dog. Some dog breeds are known to be big barkers — we’re looking at you, Samoyed, Poodles, and Dobermans — while others, like Basenjis and Bulldogs, are quiet. How much a mutt barks depends on the breeds in their background; socialization and training play a role, too.

Are mutts good family dogs?

Yes, mutts are good family dogs. Some mixed-breed dogs thrive on being four-legged family members and enjoy tagging along on outdoor adventures and being the center of attention, while others are more aloof and independent and would rather guard livestock than play fetch.

How well mixed-breed dogs settle into family life depends on socialization. Their genetic makeup plays a role, but don’t make assumptions solely based on looks. Mutts who are a mix of large, intimidating breeds might be great with kids but make terrible watchdogs.

Are mutts easy to train

Yes, mutts can be easy to train. Training is essential for all dogs, including mutts, and training any dog takes substantial time and effort, regardless of breed. Some dogs will be easier to train than others. With a consistent training routine that uses rewards and positive reinforcement, even the most strong-willed mixed-breed dogs can learn basic commands and new tricks.

Be prepared to monitor their reactions to training and switch up your routine if needed. Mutts who have active, working breeds in their backgrounds might respond best to fast-paced training that incorporates games, while mutts who are slow to learn new things might need to practice the same commands over and over.

How intelligent are mutts?

Mutts can be just as intelligent as purebred dogs. In fact, some studies have suggested that mixed-breed dogs may even outperform some purebreds in certain cognitive tasks. A mixed breed dog could be whip-smart like a Poodle and as friendly and easygoing as a Golden Retriever.

Are mutts friendly?

Yes, mutts are often known for being friendly and affectionate. Their mixed-breed heritage can lead to a unique blend of traits, often resulting in dogs with balanced temperaments and a love for human companionship.

Are mutts good for first-time pet parents?

Yes, Mutts are great for first-time pet parents. With a wide variety of mixed breeds available at shelters, you’re sure to find a perfect match for your lifestyle and personality. Each mixed-breed dog is one-of-a-kind, bringing a unique blend of traits and quirks. Adopting a mixed breed not only brings joy to your life but also helps give a deserving dog a loving home.

Are mutts healthy?

Mutts are believed to be healthier than purebred dogs because their genetics come from a wider pool. Their mixed genetic background can make them less susceptible to many hereditary health issues common in specific breeds.

Where are mutts from?

Mutts, or mixed-breed dogs, can come from anywhere in the world. They’re the result of any dog breeding with another dog of a different breed. This has led to a diverse range of dog breeds with unique physical and behavioral traits. While purebred dogs are bred to conform to specific breed standards, mixed-breed dogs offer a delightful mix of characteristics from various breeds.

Mutt health

Learn about about the Mutt health outlook and what diseases they may be prone to at various stages of their life.

Are mutts hypoallergenic?

No, there’s no such thing as a truly hypoallergenic dog. Mutts are less likely to trigger your allergies if their parents were a breed (or combination of breeds) such as Poodle, Bichon Frise, Maltese, Afghan Hound, Portuguese Water Dog or other breeds known for being “hypoallergenic.” Since it’s difficult to tell which breeds may be in a mixed-breed dog’s background based on their appearance, assessing whether a mutt is hypoallergenic can be almost impossible. A doggie DNA test, such as Wisdom Panel, could help.

But while some breeds are often considered “hypoallergenic” due to their low-shedding coats, it’s important to understand that the main allergen for many people is actually a protein found in dog saliva and dander (skin flakes), not the fur itself. So, even if a mutt has a low-shedding coat, they can still trigger allergies in some individuals.

Are mutts predisposed to certain health conditions?

Yes, mixed-breed dogs can be susceptible to some of the health conditions common to the breeds in their background. A few health conditions are common in dogs, regardless of breed, including:

  • Obesity: Mixed-breed dogs who are overweight or obese have a higher risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, and other chronic health conditions. Regular exercise, measuring your mutt’s food, and limiting their treats to no more than 10 percent of their daily calories can keep your mixed breed dog from gaining too much weight.

  • Ear infections: Mutts, especially those with large, floppy ears, are at higher risk of ear infections. Odor, redness, discharge, or pawing at the ears are common signs of ear infections. To reduce the risk of ear infections, dry your mutt’s ears thoroughly after bathing or swimming. Medication can help clear up the infection.

  • Hip dysplasia: Sometimes, a deformity prevents the ball and socket in the hip joint from fitting together properly, causing the joint to rub, not glide. The skeletal disease is more common in large-breed dogs, but dogs of all sizes can be diagnosed with hip dysplasia. Treatments for the painful condition include physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, and, in severe cases, surgery.

It’s important to remember that just because a dog’s parent breeds might have an increased risk for certain health conditions doesn’t mean they will develop them. Mixed-breed dogs are often more healthy than purebred dogs because of greater genetic diversity. Your veterinarian can help you keep an eye out for possible health problems with regular checkups.
