What were German Shepherds bred for?

German Shepherds were originally bred for herding and guarding livestock, as their intelligence, strength, and agility made them excellent working dogs in the fields. For example, 48,000 German Shepherds served in the German armed forces as message carriers, telephone line layers, and scouts in World War I. The Allied forces noted what a great aid they were to the Germans and brought back many to America and Great Britain.
