13 Hands Equine Rescue is a Not for Profit 501c3 Equine Rescue. We specialize in the rescue of unwanted, abused and slaughter bound horses. Most of our horses are rescued from kill pens and auction houses where we are their last chance. The slaughter of horses is a highly profitable business and most of the horses are ill-treated, underfed and scared in the hopes of making the most money for them. All of our horses are sent to a Quarantine facility for 30 days so they can rest and regain their health and strength. We try to find each horse the perfect "forever home" that they are entitled to.
Once they are approved by a licensed veterinarian they are sent to our facility and begin their journey to the horse they were meant to be. Some of them will be trained and evaluated to be used in our program for therapy for the human-equine connection. Others will be adopted out to other loving homes and some will stay and become 13 Hands full time residents.

Additional adoption info
First step is to go to our website and fill out the adoption application. This starts the ball rolling.
http://13handsequine.org/adoption/
We have a stringent adoption process involving interviews, a home visit, a contract and follow-up visits to ensure that the horse is adapting well to their new home.
We work hard to ensure that we find the perfect fit with you, your other horses, etc. If there are any problems at all we will take the horse back.
FEES: Our "fee" is a donation to the rescue and it varies based on the horse and how much it cost to rescue, treat, etc. We are a donation-only rescue and we count on your donation to help us rescue the next horse, and so on.
CONTRACTS: Yes, we provide a contract for your signature.
REQUIREMENTS: You must own another horse (or more). You will need sufficient land for turnout and shelter or a barn for protection. You must provide hay, grain & medications. This differs for each horse. We will call your references, one of whom needs to be your veterinarian. Please see the Adoption Application Form on our website for more specifics on requirements.
