Rescue FAQs

The Humane Society of Adams County, Inc. (HSAC) is a non-profit 501c 3 organization (EIN 86-1175774), that was established in 2005 and based in West Union, Ohio. HSAC currently serves Adams County, Ohio, through the coordination of low-cost pet sterilization clinics, pet rescue and rehoming, humane education, and public outreach programs. HSAC is not associated with the Humane Society of the United States, or any other animal welfare organization.

The HSAC Animal Shelter is operated as a private, non-profit animal shelter, which serves the residents of Adams County. The shelter has the ability to house 46 animals at one time, yet the average monthly requests for intake is much higher. HSAC uses many resources to try and find homes for every adoptable animal either by adoption, foster home or rescue group.

The Humane Society of Adams County is an Adoption Guarantee organization. This means that HSAC will not euthanize an animal to make space in the shelter for new animals. HSAC respects quality of life for all animals and, in some cases, humanely euthanizing an animal is the final act of kindness that can be shown to dangerous animals or animals sick with an illness not treatable using available resources. However, humanely euthanizing any animal is viewed only as a last resort. HSAC does not offer euthanasia services to the public.

Additional adoption info

Our adoption process is made up of two parts. Upon a decision to adopt an animal we require an application for adoption that asks questions such as housing and veterinary references. We then check references and may require a home visit. Upon approval you will fill out a contract for adoption and pay the adoption fees. Adoption fees are based on age and vetting required.
