Horse Haven of Tennessee, a 501(c)3 nonprofit, was founded in 1999 to tackle the challenge of rescuing and rehabilitating equine confiscated by law enforcement because of abuse or neglect. Horse Haven is the oldest and largest equine-rescue group in Tennessee, a state that ranks in the top six for horse population. Our mission calls us to “advocate for, rescue, protect and defend” equine. Working with law enforcement, we rescue equine from cruel or dangerous situations and provide shelter, care, rehabilitation and adoption at no charge to the counties we serve. As of April 2014, we have saved over 775 equine. We also provide education and training (via the Equine Cruelty Investigator Training Short Course) and assist local officials in investigations and preparation for court. In an effort to prevent cruelty and neglect, we educate horse owners on responsible equine care and advocate to the public on humane equine treatment. We also work with horse owners to feed their animals during times of financial crisis (Helping Hoof), offer low-cost gelding service (Studs to Buds) and assist with humane euthanasia when warranted (The Ultimate Act of Compassion). We launched the State of Tennessee Equine Rescue Network (STERN) to expand our reach beyond East Tennessee. For more information, please visit www.horsehaventn.org or call (865) 609-4030.
