We are the Lake of the Woods Humane Society. We are located on the Minnesota Canadian border on Lake of the Woods. Our mission is to rehab, make healthy adoptable animals and find them new loving homes. We are 100% volunteer operated. We have 3 shifts of volunteers a day that come in, walk and socialize the dogs and cats, and do clean up. We have 4 volunteer managers, each having ownership of a different segment of the operation. We have an endowment that provides us with $10,000 a year towards Vet bills. Last year our vet bills were $17K. We hold fund raisers to keep our doors open. We do this because we care about animals, and if we don't do it, they will be destroyed. Our community has 1100 population and is in the lower end of the income range. We go outside the county and in many cases the state to hold adoption events. We NEVER euthanize to make room for new animals. Our Walker was our longest residence. He was with us for 8 years.

We are a small remote county on the Minnesota, Canadian boarder. Due to a strong social media campaign we are adopting animals as far away as Illinois, Indiana, North and South Dakota. Many are going to Minneapolis, 350 miles south of us. People are required to appear in person
Additional adoption info
We have an extensive 3 page application form which can be found on our web site. We interview new applicants to ensure they are matched with the right pet for their family. We do NOT allow our animals to become "outside" pets. We spay/neuter EVERY cat, kitten, puppy. dog prior to adoption. We have approx $300 in every animal we adopt out. Adoption fees on dogs is $70 , cats $30, kittens $50. We believe in early spay, neuter.
Every animal has to be met and interacted with prospective new owners. In many cases, we let the pet decide.
