The New Leash on Life program is a program of the Community Pet Center (adoption/education). We rescue, vet, train and adopt 4 dogs every 8 weeks after matching the dogs to excellent forever homes. The program was started in 2006 and has adopted over 228 dogs since its inception. Two volunteer trainer/administrators screen dogs (from shelter, interventions, or vet rehoming) for acceptance into the program. The dogs live at the correctional center for 8 weeks being cared for and trained in basic manners by 8 inmate trainers. The dogs are evaluated for AKC Canine Good Citizens at the end of their training. We do it because it is a win-win-win situation for the inmates, the new families who get trained/socialized dogs, and most importantly, for the dogs who are saved.

Additional adoption info
Our adoption process requires a short application which can be emailed to and from potential adopters and a meet-and-greet when the potential adopters come to the correctional center to meet the dogs, their inmate trainers, and the volunteers that manage the program. Requirements vary by the individual dog as to whether fence is required, the hours the dog would be happy being left home alone, whether they are good with other dogs/cats/kids. These dogs are looking for loving, inside homes where they will an integral part of the family. The fees are modest for a fully vetted, trained and socialized dog. Currently $110.
