At the Humane Society of Port Jervis/Deerpark we are passionate about ensuring the protection and welfare of all animals in need. This is the legacy of our founder Robert Kleinstuber, who began the shelter in 1959 as a memorial to his beloved dog, Jeff.
Our mission is to protect and serve animals during their greatest time of need, assist our community pets and their people, and offer homeless pets a second chance at a first-rate life. By providing humane education along with free or low-cost resources, we hope to reduce the homeless pet population in our area.
We currently provide animal control impound services for 10 municipalities in Orange & Sullivan Counties and are proud to provide low-cost spay/neuter clinics, adoption and re-homing services, humane education, and community assistance to the tri-state area.

We currently contract with 10 local municipalities as their Animal Control sheltering services. Our coverage handles a good portion of western Orange County and a couple of towns in Sullivan County. Persons finding stray animals should contact their town or city animal control officer. We do not ship animals up from the south; we focus on serving the needs of animals that are right here within our community. We work with pet owners who must surrender their pets; those needing assistance should contact the shelter to schedule a time when we can best accommodate your pet.
Additional adoption info
We require all of our adopters to go through an application process that generally takes about 48 hours to complete. Veterinary references and homeowner/landlord information is requested. If there are other pets in the home, we recommend a meet and greet to assess compatibility. In home visits may be conducted in some situations. Adoption fees vary based on the animals.
