Rescue FAQs

The Lone Star Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso Rescue (LSSTLAR) is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and re-homing of abused, abandoned and neglected Shih Tzus and Lhasa Apsos. We are a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, which means your donations may be tax deductible.

Our dogs come from shelters, animal control, puppy mills, as well as owner turn-ins. They are immediately taken to our veterinarian for a complete physical examination. They are spayed or neutered, if needed, and receive all vaccinations. They are checked for both heart and intestinal worms and receive the appropriate treatments.

The next step on their journey is a foster home. We begin with evaluating their temperament, such as how they get along with other dogs or cats. We also determine if they are a playful dog or a cuddly lap dog. If we observe any behavior problems we begin positive training. They are then put on our website as being up for adoption.

Additional adoption info

Anyone who adopts may also become a foster or volunteer and vice versa. Therefore, our application process and paperwork is the same whether you are applying to foster, volunteer and/or adopt.

Once we receive this completed form, it will be assigned to an application processor/counselor, usually within 48 hours. If you do not hear from a processor within this timeframe, please email applications@shihtzu-rescue.com.
