Cara’s House is an open intake animal shelter for Ascension Parish, Louisiana. We are not a rescue group. Because we are an open intake shelter, we cannot limit the number of animals that come into our care. We cannot turn away animals regardless of age, breed, etc. Our goal is to only euthanize the terminally ill or aggressive however, we may be forced to euthanize based on the number of animals and duration of stay in order to have enough cage space available to accept all animals. We are under contract with the parish to receive strays and owner surrendered dogs & cats. We also take in many unwanted, abused and abandoned dogs and cats that the parish animal control brings in.
CARA’S House provides testing, shots, medical treatment, microchipping and spay/neuters for the animals in our care. Donations from the public go a long way in helping up continue to provide this level of treatment.
Many people have the mistaken notion that these animals are supported by tax dollars. Not so. Without your contributions of time and money, approximately 3000 animals a year would be (literally) without a place to go. CARA’s House is an "open door" shelter, we take on a tremendous but vital burden in sheltering animals that no other local agency or facility will accept.
