Pet Helpers

Animal shelter in Charleston, SC

We invite you to visit our Adoption Center and to meet our many feline and canine residents. At any one time, there are 130-150 cats and 40-60 dogs in our care. Each one of them will live with us until they find a home. Each adoption saves the lives of two animals: that of the animal being adopted, and that of the animal taking its place at Pet Helpers.

Our Mission:

Pet Helpers is a private, non-profit 501c 3 Adoption Center and Low Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic that serves communities across the Lowcountry. Our mission is to end the euthanasia of all adoptable cats and dogs by keeping all animals until adopted; providing low cost spay/neuter surgeries; offering humane education programs; pursuing animal cruelty prosecution; and initiating animal welfare legislation.

Our History:

Pet Helpers was founded in 1976 by Carol Linville, now President of Pet Helpers, after she read that 8,000 pets were being euthanized each year at local shelters. It began as a weekly 'adopt a pet' column. Thirty years later, that column has grown into Pet Helpers Adoption Center and Spay/Neuter Clinic, one of the foremost pet rescue organizations in South Carolina. Pet Helpers has slowly evolved into a widely recognized, innovative shelter that offers caring solutions to the serious problems created by pet overpopulation.

For over 30 years, we have focused on the needs of homeless animals. Through a commitment to quality sheltering and required spay and neuter, we have worked tirelessly to save those animals that are without human guardianship. We service the tri-county ares of Berkeley, Dorchester, and Charleston Counties, where we are the only independent adoption shelter of our kind that is full staffed and maintains regular business hours. We answer 20,000 calls a year to provide assistance and information to the public concerning animal issues.

We are able to accomplish so much thanks to the support of the community. We appreciate all of your support as we continue to grow.
