The mission of The Rat Retreat is to provide lifetime care for abandoned domestic rats in a home where there is human companionship 24/7. To educate the public about the plight of domestic rats including: being over-bred; being used as live food for other animals; being kept in pet stores where their problems are exacerbated by lack of knowledge on the part of the staff; being sold as pets without accompanying information on their requirements as exotics. To research new avenues of health care for domestic rats with the goals of reducing the three main causes of early death: tumors, respiratory and heart problems.

Potential adopter will answer questions concerning: habitat to be provided, experience or education about domestic rats, other animals in the home, children. You will meet with the rat, fill out an adoption contract and pay an adoption fee to help cover the cost of the spay/neuter. We require a home visit before adoption unless the adoption is out of state. We do not refund adoption fees but will exchange an animal that is not working out. No breeders.
