Shelter FAQs

The Animal Services Program provides essential animal services to the City of Fayetteville by enforcing the Arkansas rabies control act, city animal ordinances, and by licensing animals and providing safety and educational programs to the public. The Animal Services Division provides 24-hour emergency service for animals. Stray animals with license identification are returned to their homes whenever possible, and stray animals without license identification are impounded. Warnings and or citations are issued to the owners of animals who are found to be in violations of state laws or city ordinances.

Our facility and training programs meet national sheltering standards and we provide an efficiently run, sanitary, and humane facility for the handling of animals. Animal Services personnel assist the public and animal owners with reclaiming impounded stray or abandoned animals, adoption services, responsible animal ownership education, and humane euthanasia for unwanted animals. Regular veterinary care is provided for shelter animals and those injured or sick animals picked up by enforcement officers. Funds provided by the City of Fayetteville are supplemented by public donations and contracts for service with Washington County and surrounding municipalities.

The program's primary objectives are to educate citizens to be responsible animal owners; to place adopted animals into responsible, caring homes; to return lost animals to their owners; and to reduce the number of animals that must be humanely euthanized.

Additional adoption info

Our adoption fee is $60. This fee covers the spay or neuter, microchipping, rabies vaccination, booster shots, de-worming, flea and tick treatment, and the City license. We test our dogs for heartworms and our cats for feline leukemia. Considering everything that is included, our adoption fee is a great deal. Taking a "free" pet from a newspaper ad or friend can cost up to three times as much on basic health services at a veterinary clinic. However, the services provided by Fayetteville Animal Services are in no way intended to be a substitution for regular professional veterinary care. Also, by adopting from our shelter, you not only save the life of that animal, you support our services so that we can continue to care for abandoned, stray, injured, and sick animals.

We evaluate the animals to the best of our ability to assure they will be suitable family pets. Our 24 hour wait period allows our veterinary staff to spay or neuter, microchip, rabies vaccinate, and feline leukemia or heartworm test the new addition to your family. This also gives you time to purchase the items you need such as collars, leashes, food, bowls, liter boxes, dog houses, and pet carriers.
