Tinker's Dream is a 501C3 that was created as a "pay it forward" program to celebrate Tinker’s impact on her owner's life. Tinker went from being a rescue dog to a working service dog allowing her partner to return to work full time after two years of not being able to work. Tinker has since been retired do to her reaction to being kicked from behind while in the checkout line at Wal-Mart.
While our original focus was on rescuing Newfoundland & Newfoundland mixes to train as therapy & service dogs we also partner with other organizations for educational programs. Once we started rescuing at risk dogs we realized that all of them would benefit from obedience training. So we started to work with the dogs that we brought to Fort Morgan & decided to offer training classes at no charge to anyone that wanted to work with their dog for basic obedience training.
Peter approached Howard Wickham for assistance and he has provided us with the use of the old Heartland building which has allowed us to train no matter the weather. A number of dogs have received their American Kennel Club “Star Good Puppy” and “Canine Good Citizen Certificates” as a result of the class.
A new group was born out of that basic obedience class, Tinker’s Kids, which is made up of kids ages ten to eighteen. They have been working with either family dogs and / or rescue dogs on a weekly basis. Tinker’s Kids next project will be partnering with the City of Fort Morgan to present a class called, for now, Dogs 101, a family program for more responsible pet ownership, including of course an introduction to basic obedience.
