Humane Society of Mercer County

Animal shelter in Hermitage, PA

The Humane Society of Mercer County rescues animals from neglect, abandonment, cruelty, and injury. We are a non-profit organization that receives no local, county, or state funding. We work on donation only. We enforce PA's animal cruelty laws. We have two humane agents that answer calls 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. If an animal cruelty call is founded, then a sitation is issued. If the owner does not plead guilty then they are brought in front of a judge. If the judge finds them guilty, they are ordered to pay restitution fees. In the past year due to the severty of animal cruelty, 2 people have been sentenced to serve jail time. We are the voices for the animals that can't speak for themselves.

Additional adoption info

We have all adopters fill out paperwork if they are intersted in adopting one of our animals. The adoption fee is $150 for dogs and $60 for cats. This includes the basic vaccinations (distemper, rabies and bordetella for dogs, and distemper and rabies for cats). The dogs are Heartworm tested, cats FeLV/FIV tested and both are wormed prior to adopting out. The animals are also spayed or neutered if old enough.
The MCHS also offers a "week trial period". This is where we have you fill out the paperwork ahead of time, leave the adoption fee (which is not processed yet) and take the animal home to see how they "fit in" in your environment. We think this is a wonderful addition to our adoption process because we do not want any of our animals going into homes that aren't perfect for them. We want both the adoptee and the adopters to have the perfect match. If the animal doesn't work out, the money is returned as well as is the animal.
