Mission Statement: To cultivate a supportive community in which all animals are valued, appreciated and well treated, and where companion animals are placed in loving homes; to humanely address overpopulation and mistreatment of animals; and to reduce reliance on institutional sheltering.
Overview: The Montgomery County Humane Society is the pre-eminent animal welfare organization in Montgomery County, helping animals find safety, love, quality care, loving homes, and a new chance at a happy life.
In April, 2014 MCHS became fully independent and 100% privately funded. We take cats and dogs out of overcrowded public shelters and give them the tender loving care, socialization, enrichment, and new homes they so desperately need and deserve. Our highly successful adoption program has enabled us to save nearly 500 animals in our first year of private operation!
As a private, no-kill rescue we offer a range of services designed to help people adopt new pets and then keep them in their homes and out of shelters. We provide adoption and post-adoption assistance, humane education for all ages, and outreach programs that help pet owners take better care of their pets and build a more humane, animal-friendly community.

Additional adoption info
We are so pleased you’re considering adopting one of our exceptional animals!
Once you’ve reviewed our adoptable animals online, here’s what’s next:
First, visit us from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. daily (except holidays) to meet the animals in person. We’re located at 601 S. Stonestreet Ave. in Rockville, Maryland.
Second, when you find your perfect pet, complete an adoption application
Third, we ask that all family members meet the pet before the adoption is complete, to be sure that it’s unanimous between your and your new pet.
Fourth, an MCHS adoption advisor will go over the things you’ll need to know when adopting a new pet, as well as our expectations of our adopters, and to answer your questions. In some cases, we may wish to visit your home as part of the adoption process.
Please understand that in some cases, the pet may not be available to go home the same day. All animals must be spayed/neutered before adoption, and in some cases the surgery may delay taking the animal home.
Remember, when you adopt one of our animals, you adopt us too!
The MCHS team is always here to help you with your pet’s transition into your home, and to answer any questions you may have regarding your pet.
What’s included in the adoption?
All animals available for adoption through MCHS come with the following:
- Tests for heartworm (dogs) and FeLV/FIV (cats)
- Basic vaccines, if applicable
- Preventive flea treatment
- Spay/neuter
