Dog rescue in Winnipeg, MB

It is our mission to save these wonderful dogs and we will do whatever it takes to ensure that they are treated with the love and respect that they deserve. They cannot speak, so we shall speak for them.

Tens of thousands of Greyhounds lose their lives or simply disappear each year when no longer profitable; many dying horrific deaths and living lives of abuse and neglect totally void of any human affection. The sport of Greyhound racing was a huge business all over the world with countries holding racing licenses that could not even feed their own people. One could only imagine what could happen to these poor dogs.

With the help of many wonderful people HSH became an incorporated non-profit organization in August 2005 and officially became a registered charity in January of 2007. To date we have rescued over 100 Greyhounds and have had the pleasure of meeting some truly incredible people. We also have the good fortune of working with great people in the racing industry; people who love their dogs and genuinely care about what happens to them.

Throughout the years, Michaela Lamoureux (President of HSH) continued running marathons and often while training would wonder if there was a way to connect her passion for running with the ever present fund-raising efforts. It was during one of her runs that she got the idea for “Race for Your Heart”.

Michaela always loved running and missed being part of the running community. She was excited at the prospect of combining the two with the possibility of raising money for the Greyhounds. The “Race for Your Heart” became a reality on October 14, 2006.

The race gets its name from the term rescue organizations sometimes use to let a greyhound race into your heart. In 2010 the race will be held at the end of August. Monies raised will be used to save even more of these precious animals. Many volunteers attend the race with their own Greyhounds. And no, the dogs do not race! They once had to race for their lives. Now we race for theirs.

If you cannot adopt a greyhound at this time, please consider making a donation to enable us save more of these noble dogs.

Rescue FAQs

Hi-Speed Hounds (HSH) is a non-profit, all-volunteer greyhound rescue organization located in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. We adopt retired, rescued Greyhounds that come to us from tracks in the U.S.A. Most of our Greyhounds stay in Manitoba, but a few have been relocated to neighbouring provinces as well.

Additional adoption info

Anyone adopting a Greyhound must be well-versed with what is involved in opening their hearts and homes to these special animals. Greyhounds are usually between two and six years old when their racing careers end. Some are injured and unable to race productively any longer; others are just not making money for their owners and therefore are not used for breeding purposes either. After living in a crate for 22+ hours each day, you will not find a more appreciative, loving companion! Greyhounds are quiet, and have little body odour due to having no undercoat. Because of this, they do require a warm jacket when outside during our frigid winter months. Greyhounds are strictly indoor dogs, and need a soft, warm place to sleep. And sleep is what they do best, for about 80% of their day! Greyhounds are extremely gentle and calm, and only require a 20-minute walk each day and/or a fenced-in yard to romp in. However, caution should be used when introducing them to other pets and children as they have had little exposure to the world outside their racetrack/kennel environment.

Once your adoption contract has been approved and a home visit completed, the adoption fee for HSH is $395.00. Included in the fee is a spay/neuter, blood testing for several chronic canine diseases (and treatment if required), first dental cleaning, de-worming, shots (if required), a starter Martingale collar and leash, humane muzzle, free membership into the Winnipeg Greyhound Walking Club and a life-time of “tech support”. We are always available for help and advice for acclimating and training your greyhound for the rest of his/her natural life. New adopters are also encouraged to become involved with fundraising events, and as ambassadors for HSH.
