Mission Statement
Dardenne Prairie Adoption and Wellness Shelter is dedicated to the adoption of stray and unwanted dogs and cats in the west St. Charles area.
Purpose
To provide a temporary home for lost, stray and abandoned animals until their owners claim them or they are adopted into loving, responsible homes.
To assist our community when they are faced with the difficult decision of placing their companion animal in a new home.
To educate the public regarding responsible animal ownership.
To assist in providing affordable, high quality medical care for all pets owned and orphaned.
To assist our community in making educated choices when they are searching for a new companion animal.
Past
The Dardenne Prairie Adoption and Wellness Shelter was founded by Dr. Mark and Margie Lucas in 1993 in an effort to prevent the euthanasia of unwanted and stray dogs and cats. Since then, DPAWS has been committed to the welfare of companion animals in west St. Charles county.
Present
DPAWS is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) non-profit origanization that relies on donations for funding. In 1999 more than 1300 lost, unwanted and abandoned pets came through our doors. Our new facility on Callahan Road shelters all Wentzville Animal Control companion animals as well as owner relinquished pets. We provide shelter, food, veterinary care, love and attention for these animals while we try to find responsible, loving, permanent homes for them.
Future
Our goal is to not only see that as many animals as possible are adopted into responsible homes, but to educate the public so that the number of animals needing our assistance decreases.

We adopt to anyone who will provide a wonderful home for their new pet, regardless of where they live.
DPAWS is the holding facility for all companion animals picked up by Wentzville Rabies control. All abandoned animals are held for five business days. If you have lost a pet, we urge you to visit the shelter to look for your pet. If you don't find your pet at our facility, please leave a description of them along with a picture (if available) and contact information. If an animal comes in matching your pet's description, we will attempt to notify you.
There is a fee to retrieve your lost pet; the fee varies based on the length of time your pet is in our care and the nature of services your pet received.
If you find a lost, stray or abandoned animal, you should contact Wentzville Animal Control at (636) 327-5105.
Owned Pet Relinquishment
Everyday in our community a bond is broken. The bond between an owner and their pet. If you feel that you can no longer keep your pet, please contact us about the resources and options available. Whenever possible, we will refer you to resources taht will help you rebuild the bond and keep your pet.
We do request a donation from owners relinquishing their pets to the shelter; this donation helps us cover the costs of caring for the animals.
Additional adoption info
We invite prospective adopters to visit the dogs and cats in our shelter, and spend time with them in our "Get Acquainted" area. Because we want the animal you adopt to stay with you for the rest of its life, a volunteer will ask you questions about your lifestyle and the type of pet you want and will then point out those animals that we feel suit your home and needs the best. Once you have found the right pet, you will be asked to complete a Pet Adoption Agreement. We will then make an appointment for your new family member to be vaccinated and spayed or neutered. your pet will usually be ready to go home within 3-4 days post-adoption.
Adoption cost is $130 which covers all first year vaccinations , spay or neuter surgery and microchip.
All adopted animals are given vaccinations, St. Charles County rabies tag, surgically sterilized, heartworm tested (for dogs), FLV tested (for cats), and checked for parasites.
Some of our adoptions are $230 but these animals have been rehabilitated by our AMAZING Trainers Tracy and Mat !
