The Midwest Horse Welfare Foundation (MHWF) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity dedicated to providing quality homes for any horse in need. It is our goal to make certain that every horse placed in our care is provided with all of the necessary ingredients for a safe and happy life, and that it is also protected from those who would do it harm. We promise to do our best to provide only the best homes with dedicated families for every animal we place. MHWF was founded in early 2001 and we have placed nearly 700 horses since that time.
Everyone involved in our program is completely volunteer and 100% of all donations and adoption fees go back into the care of another needy horse. The meager adoption fees that we charge for the horses only begins to help cover expenses, and we greatly appreciate any donations to help us with our work and the horses. Many horses stay here for long periods of time before finding a home, and we even have horses who have been permanently retired here as well.
The horses that come to us come for many reasons and each horse has it's own story. They all have one thing in common, they need a loving and caring home. Our rules and policies are the accumulation of years of experience and planning. We are looking for good people with big hearts willing to share their lives with a horse who needs their help. For the folks who understand this, we greatly appreciate the help and support you have shown. If you are new to MHWF, then please read our Placement Agreement which is contained in our Application. We sincerely thank you for your support.
Why adoption over purchasing a horse?
While many people prefer to outright buy their horses, we feel that adoption has many advantages over outright buying. The main reason of course is that horses up for adoption need homes. The people who donate their horses are rarely interested in tax write-offs. What they
want to know is how can they find a new home for their horse without sending it off to auction or who knows where. That's the main advantage to horse adoption programs and the only reason we retain ownership of the horses for a period after that horse is adopted. We
are accountable to the people who trusted us enough to donate their horse and keep it from harm. We are here to give any horse a second chance at a great life. Thank you for reading and I hope you will visit our website to learn more.

Additional adoption info
The first step in our adoption process is to familiarize yourself with our website and read the adoption application that we have available on our website. The Placement Agreement/Adoption Contract is included in the application for your review. You can give us a call if you have any questions regarding this. You then print out and mail your application along with pictures as described on the application and a $5.00 processing fee. We will give you a call within 24-48 hours of receiving your application to discuss it with you. If you are approved for adoption, then you read the descriptions and look at the pictures of the horses available, and when one interests you that you think would be a good match just give us a call and set up an appointment to meet the horse. If this is a good match and an adoption takes place, we will fill out the Placement Agreement/Contract and you will sign that at that time. There is usually an adoption fee to be paid for the horse as well, and this fee is tax deductible. Our organization does retain ownership of the horses for a period of 5 years and you will be required to send in a vet check form each year for your horse. This is to ensure that the horses entrusted to us are being well cared for in their homes. If for any reason in that 5 year period you cannot keep your horse, the horse must be returned to us. We have a discussion forum on our website and we are always available there or via email or telephone for any questions that you have after you adopt your horse or any help that you may need. We have a large network of people and support and are here to help our adopters and other horse owners in any way that we can. Many of our adopters feel that they become part of a very large family when they adopt and share pictures and stories and updates on our forum as well. Adoption is really a great option.
